Q:  How much time must I devote to completing my Shenandoah University master’s or certificate program in TESOL?

A:  “Rule of thumb” - three hours of work each week for every hour of graduate-level academic credit.  For example, if enrolled in a three-credit course, students can expect to spend approximately nine hours per week to complete their readings, online discussions, research online, communications with instructor and fellow students, drafting and writing papers and other tasks.  If you enroll in two three-credit courses in a given semester, expect to spend approximately 18 hours per week working on your Shenandoah University TESOL studies. 


Q:  I enrolled in Shenandoah University’s TESOL program many years ago and was unable to complete my studies at that time.  Can I come back?

A:  Yes, by all means!  We have re-admitted students who started their programs in TESOL and wanted to re-enroll. 
What to do - Work with the Admissions Office www.su.edu/admissions to complete your re-application.  Depending on the circumstances (dates of earlier enrollment, grades and other issues), most re-admitted students are NOT REQUIRED to re-submit all materials and are allowed credit for courses completed. 

 

Q:  I prefer to take classes on campus at Shenandoah University.  Can I?

A:   If there are eight students who want to enroll in the on-site section of a TESOL program course, it may be offered on-site.  Please consult your academic advisor.

 

Q:  Once admitted, what computer technology tools do I need to have in order to complete my courses on line?

A:  You must have a reliable broadband Internet connection.  A webcam or video recorder may be necessary for some classes.  The Shenandoah University TESOL program uses Blackboard as its main instructional tool.  Free downloads of software needed for individual courses are available online.  Instructors for courses using these software packages provide detailed information on where to find and how to install and use these tools.

 

Q:  If admitted, how do I get help about academic questions related to my program of study?  Will I have an academic advisor?

A:   All students admitted to the Shenandoah University program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages – MS ED or a Certificate program - are assigned a graduate faculty advisor.  Advisors work very closely with students to assist them with developing their programs of study, selecting and registering for courses each semester and addressing individual concerns. 

 

Q:  When I graduate, will Shenandoah University help me find a job?

A:   Upon request, TESOL faculty often write letters of recommendation on behalf of graduates and are willing to speak by phone with prospective employers.
