Shenandoah University's School of Education & Human Development prepares practitioner-leaders by offering programs of study that conform to the following principles: practicing in a spirit of collaboration; thoughtful examination of the foundations, current contexts and future possibilities of the fields of study; encouraging proactive, problem-centered philosophies of educational and professional practice; producing graduates who will be knowledge-driven, competent decision-makers whose thinking is informed by reflective practice; and preparing caring, capable and reflective teachers, administrators, human services and public sectors practitioners. Our master's and doctoral programs are unique in their emphasis on the application of theory to real-world problems and lived experiences.

The Teacher of the Year award was created 10 years ago to recognize quality teachers in Loudoun County, Va., in specialized areas of study.     

    

Following the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti, Cindy & Jerry Saint-Fort wanted to go home to their parents in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, but they knew they needed to stay at Shenandoah to work on their education.
    

Director of Education Outreach Ronald Say has been working to forge more partnerships between secondary institutions and the post-secondary education program of Shenandoah University.    

Associate Professor of Education Leadership H. Jurgen Combs has been appointed to the Commission for Community Colleges and Teacher Education by the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE); He will serve on this commission until 2012.     

The award was created 11 years ago to recognize quality teachers in Loudoun County, Va., in specialized areas of study. The nomination process concludes on April 3, 2012.     

On Feb. 23, Shenandoah hosted a program for the university and public to learn about and reflect on the struggles facing the people of Egypt.    

Nine students from the School of Education & Human Development and Shenandoah Conservatory who are enrolled in the teacher preparation program have been nominated by faculty to represent Shenandoah at the Teacher of Promise (TOP) Institute.    

Summer reading camps in Winchester and Ashburn, Va., serve as hallmark programs of the center.

Karen is a graduate student who lives in Massachussetts. She is earning her Masters in TESOL through SU's online program.
