“Valley Echoes,” Joshua Barnett master’s thesis, begins at 8 p.m. in Armstrong Concert Hall. “Valley Echoes” is an extended piece for small orchestra, soloists, narrators and shape-note choir focused on the people of Winchester and the Northern Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War years. The texts for the piece are taken from the Civil War poetry of Walt Whitman and the diaries, letters and memoirs of four residents of Winchester and the surrounding Valley towns. The music combines 19th-century American popular and religious music with a contemporary classical style. Contact Barnett at joshuarushbarnett@gmail.com FREE
