Cool Spring Battlefield Guided Tour

Cool Spring Battlefield Guided Tour begins at 4 p.m. on the Shenandoah River’s west bank at Holy Cross Abbey, then moves to the east bank at the Shenandoah University River Campus at Cool Spring. Jonathan Noyalas, assistant professor of history and director of the Center for Civil War History at Lord Fairfax Community College, will head the tour — sponsored by SU’s McCormick Civil War Institute, the Clarke County Historical Association and the National Park Service. The tour is part of a five-year retrospective marking the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. A commemoration of the Battle of Cool Spring will be followed by events marking the Second Battle of Kernstown, battles of Third Winchester, Fisher’s Hill and the last hurrah at Cedar Creek. National Jazz Workshop

Sixth Annual National Jazz Workshop participants will learn from some of the best jazz musicians in the Washington, D.C., area during this six-day intensive program. Visiting artists include the US Army Blues, the Navy Commodores, the Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra, the Capitol Bones and others. The public is invited to the free, daily concerts by guest performers at 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Armstrong Concert Hall. The National Jazz Workshop was founded by Shenandoah Conservatory Associate Professor of Jazz Studies Matt Niess, a trombonist with the Army Blues and senior instrumentalist with the U.S. Army Band (Pershing’s Own).  For fees and more information visit http://nationaljazzworkshop.org or contact Niess at mniess@su.edu

High School Flute Workshop

High School Flute Workshop at Shenandoah Conservatory is led by internationally renowned Shenandoah’s Professor of Flute Jonathan Snowden and Rebecca Collaros, professor of flute at Levine Music. Students ages 13 through 18 will receive private lessons, attend masterclasses and perform in small ensembles. Flute faculty and counselors will help students of all levels. No audition is required, but an onsite demonstration of playing will occur in order to properly place participants into chamber groupings. A non-refundable $50 application fee is due by Sunday, June 15, and tuition must be paid in full by Saturday, June 21. Questions?
