Selected Resources

 

Databases -  these proprietary databases are leased by the Shenandoah University Libraries at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars annually.  They include materials which are authoritative and accurate and have search interfaces designed by experts to make your search for information easier.  Using these databases will generally provide more accurate information, more quickly and easily than using "free" Internet sources. They are for the exclusive use of University students and faculty and are password protected.  See note for remote access.*

Full Text Sources - there are both "free" and proprietary resources listed here.  Shenadoah University Libraries have contractual agreements with various publishers and others to provide you with the fulltext of authoritative and scholarly journals.  They are for the exclusive use of University students and faculty and are password protected.  The other resources listed here are provided by non-profit or government entities, and have been carefully selected for their authority and stability.

Free Internet Sites  -  although these web sites are "free" for anyone to use, they have been selected as reliable sources that provide accurate information.  As always, carefully evaluate all information found at free Internet sites.

Databases - Periodical and Research

American Chemical Society Journals Online - fulltext access to 30 core journals in chemistry and related disciplines. Coverage from 1996 to the present. (remote access requires Outlook username and password)

Cochrane Library - a full-text database of systematic reviews and other information on the effects of healthcare. (remote access requires Outlook username and password)

CINAHL - Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health (CINAHL) "provides authoritative coverage of the literature related to nursing and allied health."  Topics include physician assistant, cardiopulmonary echnology, surgical technology, physical therapy, emergency service, radiologic technology, medical records, medical laboratory, occupational therapy, social service health care, and more.  Over 1,200 journals are indexed and abstracts are provided for more than 800 of these titles.  "The database also provides access to healthcare books, nursing dissertations, selected conference proceedings, standards of professional practice, educational software and audiovisual materials in nursing."  CINAHL is updated monthly.

Health Reference Center-Academic - includes indexing and full-text of approximately 700 scholarly and popular journals
containing articles on
"fitness, pregnancy, medicine, nutrition, diseases, public health, occupational health and safety, alcohol and drug abuse, HMOs, prescription drugs" and more.  Indexing begins as early as 1980 for some titles.  Health Reference has more than 1.33 million records and is updated daily.  (remote access requires Outlook username and password)

Medline - is the preeminent biomedical database in the world.  Begun in 1965, Medline indexes the literature of medicine, nursing, and dentistry including but not limited to clinical medicine, nutrition, education, pathology, experimental medicine, toxicology, and health services administration.  Medline indexes over 4,600 biomedical journals published around the world and now contains more than 11 million records.  Medline is updated daily. Full Text Sources

Journal Locator - this list provides information on the journals, periodicals and newspapers available from Shenandoah University Library. Included are print and microfilm subscriptions, plus the electronic full-text journals searchable through online periodical indexes and other services to which the Library subscribes.

Journals@Ovid Full Text - provides full-text access to 200 journals in nursing, health sciences and psychology. "The database is an aggregate of hundreds of scientific, technical, and medical journals from over 50 publishers and societies.Coverage begins as early as 1993 for some titles; the database is updated daily.  (remote access requires Outlook username and password)

Physician Assistant History Center - "The PAHx Center is dedicated to the study of the history and legacy of the physician assistant profession through the collection and identification of appropriate papers, manuscripts, magazine and newspaper clippings, newsletters, references, reports, dissertations, oral histories, biographies, films, slides, videos, photographs, artifacts, memorabilia and digital images. The Center originated from the PA History Office established in 2001 within the Department of Community and Family Medicine, Duke University Medical Center and the Society for the Preservation of Physician Assistant History incorporated in 2002 to assume primary responsibility for the Center’s activities."

Healthfinder :  Your Guide to Reliable Health Information - Healthfinder is a free guide to reliable consumer health information, developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  Healthfinder can lead you to selected online publications, clearinghouses, databases, Web sites, and support and self-help groups, as well as government agencies and not-for-profit organizations that produce reliable information for the public

PubMed - is the version of the Medline database which is provided to the public free of charge by the National Library of Medicine.  While you will find this version to be complete, you will likely find the FirstSearch version easier to search.  (Click on the last phrase, and/or see "Medline" above).

National Guideline Clearinghouse - "The National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC) is a comprehensive database of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and related documents produced by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) (formerly the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research [AHCPR]), in partnership with the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Association of Health Plans (AAHP).  The NGC mission is to provide physicians, nurses, and other health professionals, health care providers, health plans, integrated delivery systems, purchasers and others an accessible mechanism for obtaining objective, detailed information on clinical practice guidelines and to further their dissemination, implementation and use."

National Library of Medicine Recommended Formats for Bibliographic Citation Supplement:  Internet Formats - provides guidelines for citing books, serials and periodicals, proprietary and free databases and more.  Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality - "the Nation's lead Federal agency for research on health care quality, costs, outcomes, and patient safety."  Part of the Department of Health and Human Services.

The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy - 17th Edition (1999) - "the most widely used medical text in the world" is free online.  Courtesy of Merck.
