The Shenandoah University Libraries website provides a
gateway to a number of databases and electronic journals, for currently
enrolled students, faculty and staff.
Proxy access permits off-campus access to most of our
databases and electronic journal collections, requiring the user to login with
their SU email username and password.
You will be prompted when you click on a particular link on our database
page or in the Journal Locator.
For a few titles, a special Password Access
may be required. To see this list,
you will also be required to log into the proxy server. Contact the Reference
Department (x4634, x5444) for assistance on accessing the Passwords page.
Access to most
library databases and many electronic journals is through the proxy server.
Users who connect to a proxied database or electronic journal from off-campus
will be prompted to supply the following:
- your SU
email/network user name (i.e., jsmith)
- your SU
email/network password
The information you
enter will be used to verify you in the SU computer system. Once verified, you
will be linked directly to the database or other electronic resource.
Some graduate
students at remote sites may not have an SU email account. If this is the case,
please contact the Library Reference Department at 665-4634. If you have
general questions regarding your SU email account, please contact Institutional
Computing at 665-5555.
If you wish to use
additional database resources on the library web site, it is necessary to enter
your email user name and password only once to be authorized for the entire
session.
Our proxy server does
not require you to configure your Internet browser for remote access. Most
current browsers should work, including Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer and
Netscape. In all cases, cookies must be enabled. Usually, the default setting
on your browser will be cookies enabled.
Some users report
difficulties if they are using an older version of a browser, or with
particular brand of browser. If you have problems, try a different or more
current browser.
Patrons using the the
proprietary AOL browser will be unable to connect through our proxy server, but
it is possible to use another brand of browser with AOL. Some corporate,
agency, or institutional, dial-up, cable, or broadband connections may
automatically configure browsers so their own proxy server is used. It's
possible these automatic settings, if they exist, could interfere with the use
of our proxy server. If these networks have a firewall or preset internet
security settings they could interfere with the proxy server. You will need to
talk to your network administrator at your place of business or school.
For questions
relating to the proxy server, please contact Christopher Bean.
