 Doctor of Nursing Practice Post Master of Science in Nursing:

Family Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatric Mental
Health Nurse Practitioner Track

The Doctor of Nursing Practice track prepares the nurse with the necessary skills and knowledge to assume the role of a primary health care provider in a variety of settings.  The Post-Master's student may complete the program in 20 months part-time.  Cohorts are established in September or January.  All classroom courses are on Wednesday and Thursday.  Clinical placement is arranged by faculty and will be scheduled at the convenience of the facility hosting the student.


Admission Requirements:

  • Completed graduate application for admission, along with a $30 non-refundable application fee.
  • Completed graduate nursing program application.
  • Earned a MSN degree from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited program. 
  • FNP Certification from ANCC or AANP or PMH certificate from ANCC
  • Minimum 720 Clinical hours in FNP program or 500 clinical hours in PMH program
  • Successful completion of MSN courses in physical assessment, pharmacology, pathophysiology, applied & interactive Genetics, and Emergency preparedness & disaster Nursing
  • Minimum graduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Official transcripts from all institutions of higher education previously attended.
  • Be a Registered Nurse licensed in Virginia.
  • CPR certification as a Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association.
  • Up to date immunizations and health record submitted to Wilkins Wellness Center at Shenandoah University.
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation
  • GRE or Miller Analogies Test
  • Written essay
  • Complete Graduate Nursing Program interview process.

Transfer Credits:

  • Only grades of B or higher are transferable.
  • A maximum of 6 credit hours.

Degree Requirements:

The degree requirement is 24 semester hours for FNP with a grade of B or better in all courses.  Clinical practicum is approximately 300 clock hours.
