Master of Science in Nursing

Nurse Midwifery


The Master of Science in Nursing, Nurse-Midwifery tract prepares the nurse with the necessary skills and knowledge to lead the profession in the promotion of high quality midwifery care; to expand knowledge through research; and to evaluate and revise care through quality assurance.  The program can be completed in 24 months fulltime with summer courses.  Part-time program is available.  Cohorts are established in September or January.  All core courses are only offered on campus on Thursday.  Midwifery courses are offered on campus on full intensive week per semester with remainder of course offered online.  Clinical placement is arranged by faculty  and will be scheduled at the convenience of the facility hosting the student.  For students from Schools of Nursing at Radford, Old Dominion, and John Hopkins Universities, please refer to information online at www.su.edu/nursing/jfehr.htm for midwifery course completion through the Shenandoah University Midwifery Initiative.


Admission Requirements:

  • Completed graduate application for admission, along with a $30 non-refundable application fee.
  • Completed graduate nursing program application.
  • Earned a BSN degree from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited program. 
  • Successful completion of BSN courses in physical assessment and community nursing, and undergraduate statistics course.
  • Minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Official transcripts from all institutions of higher education previously attended.
  • Be a Registered Nurse licensed in Virginia.
  • 2,080 RN Clinical work hours prior to specialty courses
  • CPR certification as a Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association.
  • Up to date immunizations and health record submitted to Wilkins Wellness Center at Shenandoah University.
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation
  • Complete Graduate Nursing Program interview

Transfer Credits:

  • Only grades of C or higher are transferable.
  • A maximum of 12 credit hours.

Degree Requirements:

The degree requirement is 45 semester hours with a grade point average of 3.0 or better.  Limit of 2 C's in core courses.  Clinical practicum is approximately 700 clock hours.
