Nurse-Midwifery Students Visit The Farm

The Farm

Located on 3 square miles in south central Tennessee, The Farm is home to approximately 200 persons today. Founded in 1971 with a spiritual commitment to simple living and self-reliance, The Farm has pioneered a wide range of social and physical technologies appropriate to low-cost, high satisfaction community living.

The Farm is also the home of Ina May Gaskin, the Mother of Midwifery and author of "Spiritual Midwifery." In May, the nurse-midwifery students visited The Farm for a week.

"When Ina May got into midwifery she went into it with her whole heart. Her research on the background is amazing. I can see that she is continuing to work to not only teach skills, but to teach acceptance approval." Phyllis Tarr

Pamela greeted us as a group. Her greeting was warm and friendly. I felt very welcome and at ease with her right away. Arlie Swailes

The whole group dynamics were interesting during the week. Being here has made me think about how I wish to practice and present myself as a midwife. This has been good. Arlie Swailes
