ECONOMIC
IMPACT:
Since Shenandoah University’s move to Winchester, Virginia
in 1960, its student body has grown to more than 3,000 men and
women. Based on official enrollment figures for fall 2003, 57
percent of the student body was from Virginia. There were 163
international students from 42 countries. About 790 students
live in university-provided housing and the remainder of students
reside in Winchester and surrounding communities. Shenandoah
has a strong economic impact on the community:
• More than 1,500 persons enrolled in Shenandoah Conservatory
Arts Academy;
• SU-trained nurses, physical and occupational therapists
and respiratory care professionals work in health care settings
in the region across the nation;
• The Harry F. Byrd, Jr. School of Business offers non-traditional
students – already in the work force, part-time MBA or
certificate programs; and
• The Institute for Government and Public Service offers
outstanding programs for the community, including a one-week
seminar (Student Citizenship Program) for rising senior high
school students to prepare them for leadership roles in school
and community.
