Political Science is the study of government, public affairs and politics. Students study the theories, behavior, actions, and institutional processes that characterize government and political systems.

Public Administration is what government does. It is all the theory, organizations, individuals and processes associated with carrying out public policy. The study of public administration and political science has value in several different ways: The mission of the POLITICAL SCIENCE program is to provide students with a richer understanding of politics, public policy, political institutions and governmental processes so that they have the necessary skills and knowledge for good citizenship and rewarding careers in related fields. POLITICAL SCIENCE is a dynamic program of study which qualifies students for many careers in both the public and private sectors to include, but not limited to, government, education, law, business, international affairs, campaign management, interest groups and many others. Currently one in every eight employees in the United States is employed in POLITICAL SCIENCE related jobs. Students majoring in the POLITICAL SCIENCE program can choose to concentrate in either political science, the study of government, public policy and the political behavior of individuals and groups or public administration, the study of public management in a political environment.

The POLITICAL SCIENCE program offers students many unique learning experiences such as the opportunity to …

• interact in a small classroom setting with an ambassador of extensive experience in international affairs,

• have the opportunity to participate in a national political convention, or

• attend forums in which the presenter is the former President, Secretary of State, Attorney General or….

• intern with a local attorney, city planner, congressman or state legislator, or…..

• play a major role in local, state and national political campaigns, or…..

• attend a class on women's issues in which the professor is the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences,

• participate in public service programs, like Kids Voting, which are designed to pique the interest of younger students in the electoral process…

These and other opportunities for learning await students in Shenandoah University's POLITICAL SCIENCE Program.
