6th Annual McCormick Civil War Institute

October Session

Jackson’s First Campaign

(1861- 1862)

October 19-20, 2001

Stonewall Jackson’s first campaign was a bold and daring campaign in some of the harshest and most remote terrain of what was then northwestern Virginia.  The campaign sites are rarely visited today.  The campaign was successful—until undone by a dispute involving Jackson, General Lorings subordinate, and the Confederate Secretary of War, Judah Benjamin.  Resolving the dispute required the efforts of, among others, Anna Jackson.

The 6th Annual October session of the McCormick Civil War Institute is a study of the campaign, visiting the remote sites and analyzing the dispute that almost led Jackson to resign his commission.  The session begins with a banquet and lecture on Friday, October 19.

On Saturday, October 20, the field trip will begin at 8 a.m. at Shenandoah University with a visit to Jackson’s Headquarters in Winchester.  Then the tour will follow Jackson to his headquarters at Unger’s Store, West Virginia, a site never before visited.  The tour includes Berkeley Springs, the “ghost-town” of Alpine Station, then on to Romney, West Virginia, Jackson’s objective.  Tour will conclude around 4 p.m. and return to the University.
