Involved in pre- and in-service
teacher education and training for the past
decade, Liz England has worked in both U. S.
and overseas settings. With a PhD in Second
Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (University
of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, 1984), she has
served on the faculties of university-based
graduate and undergraduate teacher education
programs in the U. S. (Southern Illinois University
at Carbondale, Eastern Michigan University,
Ypsilanti); as a program administrator (Eastern
Michigan University, Ypsilanti; Marymount University,
Arlington, Virginia; and the American Language
Academy, Rockville, Maryland); and with short-term
consultancy assignments overseas. Until August
2005, Liz was Associate Professor at the MA
TEFL program, English Language Institute, The
American University in Cairo, Egypt. She also
develops a variety of academic, pre-academic,
workplace and community service-oriented teacher
education programs.
Recently, Dr. England was elected as a member
of the TESOL (International) Board of Directors
(Interest Sections), serving a three year term,
2004-2007. In addition, she served a three-year
elected term of office as a member of the NAFSA
ATESL leadership team, 1999-2002.
Having served TESOL affiliates in Michigan (President
of MITESOL, 1990 and nine-year board membership),
Washington, D. C. (WATESOL), and in Egypt, she
holds several offices in professional organizations.
She is a member of the EgypTesol Journal Review
Board. She recently completed a three-year elected
term of office as a member of the NAFSA ATESL
leadership team.
In ESL, EFL, and in teacher education, she has
served the profession overseas in both long-term
academic positions and as a short-term consultant.
With academic postings overseas at The American
University in Cairo (Associate Professor, 2001-2005,
and 1984-86, Visiting Assistant Professor),
and in an adult training school in Baden-Wurttemburg,
Germany (Fachhochschule, Baden-Wurttemburg,
Summer 1991 and 1992), her teaching and teacher
education experience span a variety of contexts.
As an Academic Specialist for the US Department
of State, Liz England has worked with hundreds
of teachers in different countries: the Czech
Republic, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Israel,
Jordan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Syria,
Thailand and Viet Nam. She was an invited guest
speaker at the 1996 TESOL Russia international
meetings, lectured in Hungary and Turkey, and
taught courses in the 1995 TESOL Summer Insitute
in Venezuela.
