How to Apply for a Program How to Apply
as a Special Student

Use the convenient on-line application. Complete instructions are provided there. All application materials must be sent to: Admissions Office, Shenandoah University, 1460 University Drive, Winchester, VA 22601, USA.

Please note:
  • Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in hand before starting any of these programs.
  • Undergraduate or previous graduate GPA must normally be 3.0 or better. GRE is not required, but may be submitted to support application if GPA is below 3.0.
  • An admission essay is required. This should state exactly which program you are applying for, set forth your reasons for applying, and explain any unusual circumstances. The essay is to be your own work, written without assistance from anyone.
  • Three letters of reference are required. These should be from people who can testify to your academic ability, related accomplishments, character, etc.
  • Complete transcripts of all previous post-secondary academic work are required. These are to be sent directly from the institution(s) to the Admissions Office.
  • Applicants for the Add-On Endorsement in ESL must provide evidence of a valid K-12 teaching license, and six credits of a foreign language or equivalent proficiency.
  • Applicants for the Master of Science in Education (TESOL Concentration) may apply to transfer up to 9 credits of qualifying graduate coursework. For details, see the SU TESOL TRANSFER CREDIT REQUEST FORM.
  • Transcripts from foreign institutions must be evaluated for equivalency in the US system, and translated into English if necessary, by a reliable agency such as World Education Services.
  • Applicants whose first (native) language is not English must submit formal evidence of English proficiency. TOEFL is preferable, but other tests, such as IELTS, will also be accepted if correspondence to TOEFL is known. Admission requires TOEFL (or equivalent) score of 100 (Internet-based TOEFL), 250 (Computer-based TOEFL), or 600 (paper TOEFL).
