Winter Break Rebuilding Mission Trip to Alabama / January 2012
Students and university staff members traveled to Alabama over Winter Break 2011-12. They volunteered in places affected by terrible hurricanes earlier in 2011. The Shenandoah team worked with the Huntsville Habitat for Humanity warehouse, the Disaster Center for North Alabama Conference of the UMC and the Family Resource Center of Athens, Ala. Traveling to and from Alabama as a group and working shoulder to shoulder while there served to strengthen the Shenandoah team as well as provide assistance to those in need.
Spring Break Medical Mission Trip to Brazil / March 2012
For the second year, faculty and students from the Division of Nursing boarded the John Wesley Medical Boat in March 2012. The boat routinely travels along the Amazon River in Brazil, stopping often to provide care for residents of isolated communities along the river’s banks. These trips offer Shenandoah nursing students an incredible opportunity to develop their skills, broaden their experience and have extraordinary out-of-classroom nursing lessons.
Spring Break Conservatory Mission Trip to Guatemala / March 2012 In March 2012, the Office of Spiritual Life partnered with the university’s renowned Shenandoah Conservatory to send a team of 10 students, faculty and staff members to Guatemala, where they worked with young school children, teaching them songs and mentoring them in their learning environment. In the afternoons, the Shenandoah team physically helped the school by painting and building in order to enhance the learning environment. The expectation is that this will become an annual trip as Shenandoah University establishes relationships with the Mayan people of Guatemala. The team traveled with Highland Support Project.
Spring Break Medical Mission Trip to Nicaragua / May 2012
During its annual trip to Leon, Nicaragua, the Shenandoah University Medical Mission Team aided the impoverished families living in the spectacular mountain setting of Leon and Matagalpa. Graduate students in physician assistant studies and pharmacy served in one of three rural clinics run by El Ayudante, a Christian mission organization. They gained clinical experience by providing medical care for people who would otherwise have none. They also made friends and learned about the root causes of poverty.
