Shenandoah
University Intramural Co-Ed Volleyball Rules
Team:
Consists of six players, but may start with four. There must be
at least one female on the floor at all times. A team diminished
to fewer than four players as a result of injury during the
game, may continue. Teams must wear tennis shoes or similar
footwear. No black soled shoes.
Game Length:
Fifteen points wins the game provided there is a two point lead.
A match will consist of two out of three games. The third game
of the match will be played by rally score rules (a point is
scored on each serve).
Forfeits:
Any team that does not have four players present within five
minutes after the scheduled starting time will forfeit the game.
THIS RULE WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED. Two forfeits eliminate
your team from further play.
LEGAL
HITS
Forearm Pass: Ball must strike both forearms simultaneously. Cup
one hand into the other and keep elbows straight.
Set:
Ball is contacted by fingers and thumbs of both hands. Get under
ball, bend knees, elbows bent and pointing out, index fingers
and thumb form a triangle. This is the set for the spike.
Spike:
Two foot take off from 10' to 12' straight running approach.
Jump 2' to 3'behind the ball with the ball overhead. Lead
spiking arm with elbow, snap heel of hand into the ball as
non-spiking arm is driven down. Do not direct ball by carrying
it in your hands. Hit cleanly, instantaneously.
Block:
Jump straight up toward direction of spike, near to net with
hands above head spread to cover as much space as possible. You
may reach over the net to block a ball that has been spiked.
Serve:
Both feet must be behind black line. Hold or toss the ball with
one hand and hit it (overhand or understand) with the other.
As a general
rule: An instantaneous hit by any body part is legal.
MAJOR
RULES
1. The ball
remains in play when a team forces a ball to hit a ceiling or
similar obstacle of any height anywhere on its own side of the
net and the net extended, provided that the team can legally
play the ball next. Otherwise, the ball is blown dead and
awarded to the other side.
2. The
boundary lines are considered to be in bounds.
3. Each team
can hit the ball no more than 3 times before the ball crosses
the net again, unless there is simultaneous contact by
opponents. A block does not count as one of the three hits.
POSITION
RULES
1. Three
players in front line, three players in back line. Players in
the back line cannot spike in front of the 10 meter attack line.
2. Serving
order must be maintained.
3. Teams must
rotate players in a clockwise direction.
FOULS
1. Player
serves out of order.
2. Player does
not cleanly hit the ball (ball appears to rest momentarily at
contact).
3. Player hits
ball successively (exception: blocker may re-hit after
simultaneous hit).
4. Team plays
the ball more than three times before sending it to opponents
court.
5. Player
touched net, reaches over net to block a set, steps fully across
center line, interferes with opponents under net while ball is
in play.
6. Unsporting
play.
Fouls result
in point or side-out depending on whether the team fouled
against is serving (point) or receiving (side-out). Simultaneous
fouls by opponents result in replay of point.
REPLAYS
Point is also
replayed when:
1. Official
cannot see play to make a judgment.
2. Any object
enters the court or interferes with play.
3. A player
serves before officials whistle.
4. A player is
injured.

TEAMS
1.
Teams are comprised of 10 players
2.
You are allowed to have 14 on the roster
3.
You must have 6 players to start
4.
You must have a minimum of 2 girls on the court to start the
game
BASICS
1.
The “field” will be one standard sized basketball court
2.
The “equipment” will be 4 6”-10” rubber gym balls
3.
The object is to have the last player standing at the end of the
time limit. This is accomplished by getting players “OUT” as
explained below.
4.
Each “match” will be the best of 5 games
5.
Each “game” will last for 6 minutes
MAJOR
RULES
-
Scoring
will be the following:
-
Each
game is worth 2 points
-
(Playoffs only) In the event of a tie, a sixth modified
game will be played for 1 point to determine a winner
-
Each team
will start behind their respective end lines until the
referee blows the start whistle
OUTS
-
The four
balls will be placed at the centerline at the start of the
match and each team must race to the middle to gain
possession of a ball. The players must not cross the
centerline in any form or fashion when going for the balls.
Any player who crosses the centerline will be considered
“OUT”.
-
To count,
balls must be thrown below the neck. If any ball hits an
opposing player above the neck, the thrower will be
considered “OUT”. On the other hand, any player who, at the
discretion of the Referee, is found to be “ducking”
intentionally to hit his/her head will be considered “OUT”.
-
Ducking is
the lowering or moving of the head into or out of the path
of a ball in any form or fashion. Ducking to avoid a ball is
legal. If, in trying to duck to avoid a ball, another ball
hits you in the head, you are still out for ducking.
-
The
referee will call you “OUT” for the following reasons:
-
A
ball, thrown by an opposing player, hits you below the
neck, and the ball then hits the floor
-
The
opposing player catches a ball that you have thrown
-
If a
ball hits one player and one of his/her teammates
catches the ball before it hits the ground, then the
player who threw the ball is OUT and the player who was
hit by the ball has been saved by his/her teammate.
-
If you
have a ball in your hand, you may use it to protect
yourself or ricochet/deflect a ball to a teammate. If
your teammate catches the ball, the one who threw the
ball is considered OUT. If the ball hits your teammate
and the ball hits the ground, then your teammate is OUT.
A player may still be saved if another teammate catches
it after it bounces off the second teammate.
-
If you
have a ball in your hand that you attempt to deflect
with and the force of your opponent’s throw forces your
own ball out of your hands, you’re OUT.
-
If you
or your team holds a ball for more than 15 seconds, this
is considered a delay of the game. The last person
holding this ball must roll the ball on the floor to the
opposing team and is considered OUT. This will be
implemented at the discretion of the Referee.
-
You
are not OUT if the ball hits the floor before it hits
you.
-
You are
also “OUT” for leaving the boundaries of the court to
retrieve a ball. You MUST stay within the boundaries at all
times unless you have no one who has been determined to be
OUT. In this instance, only one person is allowed to cross
the outside boundary lines to retrieve a ball. If more than
one person crosses the boundary lines, every person after
the first person will be considered OUT. If people on your
team have already been declared OUT, they may stay on the
sidelines and retrieve any balls that leave the court area.
-
People
on the sidelines may not enter the boundary of the court
area at any time.
-
When
they retrieve a ball they may give that ball to their
team on the court.
-
People
who are out cannot cross the centerline extended to
retrieve a ball. They must stay on their side of the
court at all times, regardless of when the lines change
for the people on the court.
TIMING
RULES
1.
Prior to 2 minutes left, everyone must stay on his or her side
of the centerline
2.
At 2 minutes left and prior to 1 minute left, everyone is
allowed to move all the way to the opposing teams three-point
line “extended” (an imaginary line parallel to the centerline at
the top of the three-point arc)
3.
At 1 minute left, everyone is allowed to move over the entire
court.
WINNING
THE GAME
-
There are
two ways of winning a game:
-
One
team gets the entire other team OUT before 6 minutes are
up
-
At the
end of six minutes, the team with the most players left
will be declared the winner
-
In the
event of a tie, each team will split the points for that
game
-
To win the
match, your team must have more points than the other team.
Ties are allowed in the regular season. There are special
rules for playoffs listed below.
PLAYOFFS
-
Playoff
games are played just like regular season games
-
In the
event of a tie at the end of the 5th game, a 6th
modified game will be played. This modified game will follow
the same rules as a regular game with a few exceptions:
-
This
game will start with a cone at the center of each end
line. The purpose of this cone will be explained below.
-
The
zone lines only move once with 2 minutes left to go. No
one is allowed to move past the three-point line at any
time.
-
There
are two ways to win this game:
-
If
your team gets the other team entirely OUT
-
If
your team hits the other teams cone on the fly, then
that game is over immediately. If the ball bounces off
the floor and hits the cone, it IS NOT considered hit.
If the ball bounces off an opposing team member and hits
the cone, it IS considered hit.
-
If a
cone has not been hit, and there are still even numbers
of players on either side at the end of 6 minutes, time
extends and the game becomes sudden death.
-
The
first team to get an opposing team member OUT or hit the
cone will be declared the winner.
