OTHER ON-CAMPUS TIDBITS

What about pets?
Fish are the only pets allowed. Life on campus is just not compatible with pet ownership. Many of your fellow students are allergic to animals, and even the most well cared for animals carry parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mites.

Lofts are permitted
Lofts must be free-standing and treated with fire resistant materials. It is best to build it to accommodate our bed frame(s) because all furniture must remain in the room.

Temporary Hotel Accommodations
When the number of residential students exceeds occupancy, we accommodate students in one of two hotels within easy walking distance of campus. Usually, the students who are housed temporarily in the hotels are new students who pay their advance tuition deposit late in the summer. We will make every effort to move you to campus as soon as space becomes available.

Security of Campus
Residence halls exterior doors are locked between 9:00 pm and 6:00 am. During these times, you must use your Horned Card (SU ID) to enter. A security phone is located at the entrance of each hall for your convenience.

Security staff is on duty 24 hours per day. They can be contacted by cellular phone at any time of the day or night.

Learn more about the SU Department of Public Safety http://www.su.edu/studaffs/security/

The best way to keep you and your possessions safe on campus is to keep your room door locked at all times. We recommend that you also not walk alone after dark and never prop exterior doors. Remember: Safety and Security is Everyone’s Responsibility.

Health Insurance
All full time students are required to have health insurance. Shenandoah University offers insurance for those students that are not currently covered under their parent’s health care policy. Enrollment and claim forms for the University student insurance program for graduate and undergraduate students are available in the Wilkins Wellness Center

If you need assistance in acquiring insurance please feel free to stop by the Wilkins Wellness Center for additional information.

The Office of Residence Life
The Residence Life Office provides a wide array of social, educational, cultural, and leadership opportunities within the halls.

The residence staff assesses residents’ needs and invites speakers, coordinates trips to local sites, and organizes regular social activities.

The Residence Hall Council elects representatives from each hall to serve as a governing council for the hall. Dues are collected during orientation in the fall. They provide activities, determine how public area space is used, and make recommendations regarding policies and procedures.

Long-distance calling at SU
The Business Office at Shenandoah University would like to offer you the opportunity to sign up for you telephone long-distance service early so you can have immediate access upon your arrival on campus. Telephones are available in residence hall rooms on campus.
Local telephone service is free of charge. There is a $50 fee for initial hook-up.
You will need a telephone access code assigned to you by the Business Office to make long distance calls if you do not want to use a telephone calling card.

Each student will be billed monthly by the second business day of the month.
Payment for student long distance calls is due by the 20th of each month in the Business Office. If payment is not received by the 20th of the month, your long distance access code will be disconnected.
