Global & Community Education at Shenandoah University strives to not only provide the opportunities that enable exploration of the world but to also empower our learners and scholars with the knowledge, skills and abilities to become competent as intercultural communicators. Toward that end, we know that is it critical that we support learning abroad with resources to effectuate this result.

Following are resources to support your intercultural and learning abroad growth, or to facilitate such with others. We are always looking to expand our resources for the SU community, so if you know of a great resource that is not listed below, please let us know!

Database of Research on International Education - Extensive website that covers every aspect of international education.

Financial Resources for Learning Abroad:

English for Heritage Language Speakers (EHLS) - This program is an English as a second language program for adults who want to achieve professional proficiency in English. EHLS allows participants to develop the English language skills they need to succeed in U.S. government, business and industry. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Europe Summer Research Institute - The goal of the Central Europe Summer Research Institute (CESRI) is to provide U.S. graduate students in the sciences and engineering with a high-quality international summer research experience in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland or the Slovak Republic.

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia - Awards for study in Asia with the primary goal of increasing the number of American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia by providing them with information and financial assistance.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program - Opportunities for recent graduates, postgraduate candidates, and developing professionals and artists.

Gilman International Scholarship Program - The Gilman International Scholarship program is designed for U.S. undergraduate students who wish to study abroad. The program offers scholarships to students with financial need and encourages those underrepresented in study abroad to apply.

International Scholarships online - A financial aid and scholarship resource for international students wishing to study abroad. At this site, you will find a comprehensive listing of grants, scholarships, loan programs and other information to assist college and university students in their pursuit of study abroad.

Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program (JFMF) - The JFMF program is designed to provide American primary and secondary school teachers and administrators with opportunities for fully funded, short-term study programs in Japan.

Korean Studies Workshop for American Educators - The Korean Studies Workshop for American Educators provides U.S. educators with fully-funded study visits to Korea.

National Science Foundation: Guide to Programs - This NSF encourages exchange in science and engineering. This site has an international component, providing links with valuable information on fellowships, grants and awards, summer institutes, workshops, research and education projects, and international programs. Targeted for students as well as professionals.

National Security Education Program (NSEP) - NSEP provides outstanding and highly motivated U.S. undergraduate and graduate students with the necessary resources and encouragement to acquire language skills and experience in countries critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for a commitment to seek work in the federal government.

Office of Postsecondary Education, U.S. Department of Education - This site describes programs and fellowships offered by the U.S. Department of Education.

Pitsco's Launch to Grants and Funding - This site provides links to dozens of grant and funding sources.

Scholarship News - This site provides links to scholarships, grants, fellowships and internships for students. Listings are organized by topic.

The Smithsonian Institution - Contains a fellowships link to Smithsonian Opportunities for research and study.

Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program - This program sends young U.S.-based biomedical engineers abroad to conduct a study and/or research project relevant to biomedical engineering as a field, and with a specific interest in building international bridges with this growing science.

World Wide Arts Resources - Focusing solely on the arts, this site provides links for funding sources, university programs, and arts organizations all over the world.

Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) - CAORC is a federation of independent overseas research centers in 15 countries. In addition to other scholarships, CAORC offers intensive summer language training programs in several countries and languages with funding provided by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State. Post-College Scholarships:

The Rhodes Scholarship - A Rhodes Scholarship offers the opportunity to study at Oxford University for two years, with all tuition fees paid and a living allowance provided.

The British Marshall Scholarship - The British Marshall Scholarship finances young Americans of outstanding ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom.

The Mitchell Scholarships - The Mitchell Scholarships allow 12 American post-graduates to pursue one year of study at one of the nine institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland and to have an internship in Irish society.

Luce Scholarship Program - The award provides for a year's experience in Asia in an internship arranged individuals for each scholar based on his or her specific interests, background and qualifications. The scholarship provides travel and living expenses plus salary, which varies with the country of placement.

Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarship - These scholarships are awarded for one year of study at Churchill College, Cambridge, in the fields of mathematics, biology, biochemistry, physical anthropology, computer speech and language processing, computer science, physics, chemistry or mathematical statistics. This scholarship is research oriented.

Fulbright Grants - Fulbright grants support graduate study and research in over 100 foreign countries. Most grants awarded for programs of study or research that require one academic year.

Carnegie Endowment for International Peace - Each year the endowment offers one-year fellowships to students who have graduated during the past academic year.

Harry S. Truman Scholarships - Juniors planning careers in public service are encouraged to apply for the Truman Scholarship. Selectees will receive $3,000 for the senior year of undergraduate education and a total of $27,000 for graduate studies.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship - The Gates Cambridge Trust offers about 40 awards annually, which will cover the costs of studying at Cambridge.

Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Fellowship Program - This program seeks to attract outstanding young people who have an interest in pursuing a career in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State.

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships - The purpose of this program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries.

Rotary World Peace Scholarships - The Rotary Centers for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution offer individuals committed to peace and cooperation the opportunity to pursue a two-year master's level degree in international studies, peace studies and conflict resolution at one of the seven Rotary Centers.

DAAD Scholarships - The German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdients or DAAD) selects highly qualified students (with at least junior standing) for scholarships supporting 10 months of graduate study and research at universities in Germany.

Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program - As the countries of the world become more interdependent, the Robert Bosch Foundation recognizes the importance of familiarizing young American professionals and executives with the political, economic and cultural environment of Europe and of Germany in particular.

The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET) - The JET program aims to promote international awareness at the local level by inviting young overseas university graduates to assist in international exchange and foreign language education in local governments, boards of education or junior and senior high schools throughout Japan.

American-Scandinavian Foundation Fellowships - The American-Scandinavian Foundation provides fellowships for advanced research or study in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
