Safety Tips for Students

Your safety is important to us. When you walk on campus or use a parking facility please remember the safety tips below. Together, we can make campus a safer place for everyone.

  • Walk confidently: look ahead and make eye contact.
  • At night, walk with a friend if possible. If you must walk alone and you feel uncomfortable, contact campus security for an escort.
  • Utilize the "Campus Safe Walk Program" by calling Campus Security at (540) 678-4444. This program offers anyone that calls an escort to and from the building.
  • If you are walking alone at night, wear a whistle around your neck.
  • Do not wear a stereo headset when you are walking on campus.
  • Be aware of the people and environment around you.
  • If someone is following you, go to the nearest place where there are other people.
  • Walk near the street curb. Avoid bushes, dark doorways, and other places where someone could be concealed. Do not walk in secluded areas.
  • Avoid short cuts. Take well traveled and well lit walkways.
  • Trust your instincts. If someone makes you uncomfortable, even in daylight, do what is necessary to move away from them.
  • If you feel threatened by an approaching car, scream and run in the opposite direction.
  • If you are returning to your vehicle, have your car keys in hand before leaving your present location.
