MISSION:
The purpose
of Shenandoah University’s Counseling Services is to provide confidential counseling services in order to help students achieve academic and personal
goals. Counseling programs and services are offered to help students live more
effective, responsible, and satisfying lives. Respect for privacy and the
diversity of each campus community member will be employed so SU community
members can feel confident in making informed decisions which will enhance the
quality of their lives.
A wellness
philosophy serves as the foundation for all services and programs. Wellness
helps students be more responsible for their lives and to understand the factors
that affect their well-being. Students are at a greater risk when they meet
demands and challenges without informed and reflective decision-making. In
order to help our campus community maintain a healthy balance in life and a
success in academic, vocational, and personal goals, best practices in
counseling, support and referral services will be available.
SERVICES:
Counseling
Services offers short-term personal counseling in the Wellness Center. We
provide a comfortable, safe, and confidential environment for allowing our
students to explore personal concerns. It is in this nurturing setting that
students can practice strategies for improving decision-making skills, learn
healthy coping methods, and find support for appropriate resources. Individual
and group therapy is available as well as consultation with faculty, staff and
parents. Counseling resources ranging from pamphlets and videos to on-line
assessments are also available. These services are free to students, faculty
and staff.

NEW SERVICES:
Understanding Group Therapy
Group therapy is appropriate for people with a variety of
interests, issues and challenges. Each day we interact with people. Some days,
and with some people, this interaction is experienced with a great deal of ease,
while other days, and with other people, there is awkwardness and difficulty
In group therapy, five to ten people meet face-to-face with one or more trained
group therapists and discuss their personal concerns. Group members also
contribute their feedback to each other by expressing their own feelings about
what someone says or does. What makes this group interaction helpful is that it
is a closed and safe setting. The content of the group sessions is confidential;
what members talk about or disclose is not discussed outside the group.
Group therapy, like individual therapy, is intended to assist people who would
like to gain support, increase self-awareness, and learn new ways to cope with
personal and interpersonal challenges. Group therapy affords us the opportunity
to hear different viewpoints about issues and to realize we are not alone in
dealing with certain life issues.
Because unexpressed feelings, fears or anxieties are a major
reason why people experience difficulties in relationships, sharing your
feelings in the group affects how much you will benefit from group.
Group therapy can be especially effective for people interested
in exploring their interpersonal style and enhancing their approach to
relationships in areas such as trust, intimacy, anger, conflict, assertiveness,
risk taking and improving self-esteem.
