Shenandoah University Professor of Religion and Philosophy Barry Penn Hollar, Ph.D. presented at the Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture in early June.
While the connection between baseball and Dr. Penn Hollar’s field of study may not be apparent, Penn Hollar is a baseball enthusiast, as he even notes on his faculty profile page.
And, his presentation, “Was My ‘Purpose Pitch’ Justified?: An Ethical Analysis” was part of a session called “2B or Not 2B: Baseball and Ethical Conundrums.” The session included the work of other academics, including “Violence, Race, and Redemption: Marichal/Roseboro” and “Apologia in Sports Media: The Case of Colin Cowherd and Baseball.”
The symposium, at which academics and researchers discuss baseball and its relation to culture and society, is sponsored by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the State University of New York – Oneonta.
