Shenandoah University’s Center for Leadership in the Public & Nonprofit Sectors will present a symposium titled “Nonprofit Governance: Leadership, Visibility & Impact,” from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11, in Halpin-Harrison Hall, Stimpson Auditorium, on the campus of Shenandoah University (1460 University Drive, Winchester).
The center has partnered with the Northern Shenandoah Valley Nonprofit Alliance for Excellence, the VA Tri-State Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and Shenandoah University’s Center for Public Service & Scholarship to bring to the Winchester area a full day of presentations and educational sessions.
This summer, the university’s School of Education & Human Development (SEHD) launched a new center that serves as a resource for public and nonprofit organizations. It supports the work of area organizations including local school systems, higher education institutions, nonprofit entities and public sector agencies. This symposium is the second major event presented by the center.
“We look forward to providing our nonprofit partners with a symposium that covers a broad range of issues that nonprofit organizations face day in and day out,” said SEHD Director Dennis Kellison, Ed.D. “Not only will the symposium address topics such as financial management and advocacy, but it will also delve into legal and human resources issues, as well as the challenges nonprofit organizations face in a for-profit world.”
Keynote speakers include Founder and President of the Charity Defense Council Dan Pallotta as well as Creative Director for TrueSense Marketing Jeff Brooks. At 9 a.m., Pallotta will present, via live feed, “Uncharitable: How Restraints on Nonprofits Undermine Their Potential,” while Brooks will give his keynote address at 12:15 p.m. in conjunction with the symposium’s lunch program.
The symposium also offers these concurrent seminars from 10:15 a.m. to 11 a.m. and again from 11:15 a.m. to noon:
- “More War Paint – Louder Drums: Challenges of a Nonprofit Organization in a For-profit World,” led by Top of Virginia Regional Chamber Interim CEO Osborne Abbey, Ed.D.
- “Measuring Impact in the Nonprofit Sector,” led by Associate Dean of the Shenandoah University Harry F. Byrd, Jr. School of Business, Bogdan Daraban, Ph.D.
- “Financial Management for Not-for-Profit,” led by Olivia Hutton, CPA, of Yount Hyde & Barbour
- “Advocacy as Strategy,” led by Director of the Shenandoah Valley Network Kate Wofford
- “Legal & HR Issues,” led by Shenandoah University Harry F. Byrd, Jr. School of Business Professor of Business Law John Winn, J.D., LL.M.
A mini-workshop addressing “Tools for Engaged Communication” by Tammy Bjelland of Language In Bloom will be offered at 8:30 a.m. Closing remarks will be provided by Chairman of the Board of Trex Company Ron Kaplan.
