Shenandoah Conservatory announces the winners of the second-ever 2016 Jazz Soloist Competition. High school students from across the nation were invited to submit video recordings to compete for scholarships, cash prizes and a chance to perform with The U.S. Army Blues, one of the nation’s finest jazz ensembles. Tenor saxophonist Alex De Lazzari from Arlington, Virginia, won first prize, which included a $300 cash prize, and a $5,000 minimum conservatory award to Shenandoah Conservatory (pending a successful audition and full acceptance to Shenandoah Conservatory and Shenandoah University). Alto saxophonist Daniel Henson from Clifton, Virginia, was awarded second prize, which included a $100 cash prize and a $2,500 minimum conservatory award to Shenandoah Conservatory (pending a successful audition and full acceptance to Shenandoah Conservatory and Shenandoah University). The other two finalists were guitarist Allan Fogelson from Leesburg, Virginia, and trumpeter Ian Livingston from Shepherdstown, West Virginia. All four finalists were invited to perform with The U.S. Army Blues at Shenandoah Conservatory on Oct. 22.
