Good people and good places is exactly what we encountered on our first day here in South Africa. From walking around in the water front and meeting people from Canada who were nice enough to help us take a group picture; to having Linda (our tour guide) take us on a tour of Cape Town and where Nelsen Mandela gave his speech in the town center. Its amazing to know we were visiting such a historical place. About 20 years ago many people came to together as one at that exact spot to hear him speak and it’s almost as if you can still feel the energy of that ecstatic moment today, especially when you turn your head and look at the South African flag waving above the Castle of Good Hope. After that, the guide from the Langa township welcomed us in a very special way with a wonderful performance of young boys and their gum boot dancing(which Jacob absolutely adored). There was even a chance to play the drums in a drum circle (my hands were in so much pain!) We heard so many interesting things about their culture as well and things such as; boys rites of passage, a story of a man named Schedrick and his life during apartheid, and even communally shared a drink, “This is like communion but instead of wine it’s beer” -Allyson. We were able tour through Langa and see churches, under cover pubs, and even where our tour guide use to live. The children and families around us were happy to share their stories with us; it made us feel right at home. And what was the best way to end the night ? With a South African home cooked meal of course ! Mama Mzansi had us running back for seconds, but that wasn’t even the best of it. Her story left us feeling grateful that we had an opportunity to support her business and tell others about this wonderful place that is in Langa. So with that I will leave you with this one message; there might be a place that you are fearful to go to, but sometimes that fear comes from other people’s perspectives. Don’t let that be your barrier, because where there are good people there are good places. Till next time!
