Black History Month Service Day: Help Bring Generations of Middletown’s African American History Out of the Shadows.

February 24 @ 12:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Black History Month Service Day: Help Bring Generations of Middletown’s African American History Out of the Shadows is from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Students will have an opportunity to help bring an African American cemetery located in Middletown, Virginia, out of obscurity and aid in the process that will eventually make this a visitable historic site. You can serve on a project that will eventually allow visitors to learn about the lives and legacies of interred African Americans, including slaves. The project will involve students deciphering and recording information on headstones and plotting scores of grave sites in this cemetery. This crucial-baseline information is an important step in aiding Middletown’s Heritage Society reconstruct and interpret this nearly forgotten local historic treasure. Sign up using the Service Day Sign Up Form by Saturday, Feb. 17. Space is limited to 12 students. For more information, contact the Mosaic Center for Diversity at mosaiccenter@su.edu.
