Hispanic Heritage Month Speaker: Krishna Leyva

Krishna J. Leyva is a family engagement and Latino cultural expert who has worked with low-income immigrant youth, communities, and families in Northern Virginia for over 18 years. She has extensive experience and knowledge in community outreach and participatory research practices. In her work, she advises how immigrants and refugee families integrate and how social policies and practices facilitate or hinder family functioning, community integration, and family engagement in schools. She is well known for working with Latino and immigrant families, mainly those systematically marginalized by society, to promote family engagement and parent education in schools and communities. She is currently working as the Family and Community Engagement Manager for Alexandria City Public Schools, serving more than 16,000 students and families, of whom 36% are Latino.
