Syrian Refugees in Lebanon

February 21, 2017 @ 7:00 pm

Syrian Refugees in Lebanon will begin at 7 p.m. in Hester Auditorium, Henkel Hall. Since the beginning of the Syrian Civil War in 2011 displaced Syrians have fled their homes and communities to every neighboring nation in the region, with over 1.6 million relocating to the Republic of Lebanon. How are Syrian refugees integrated into the Lebanese economy? How do Lebanese perceive their long-term obligations to Syrians living in their country? How do Syrians in Lebanon perceive their own futures in Lebanon? What are the impressions that Syrians and Lebanese have of one another? What is the historical and political backdrop against which this crisis is set? What are the implications of contemporary US policies concerning Syrian refugees that will impact Syrians living in Lebanon? These and other questions will be addressed in a discussion of research begun in July, 2016 in Lebanon by Shenandoah University Adjunct Professor of Anthropology, Patrick Farris. This is a free presentation. This discussion is open to the Shenandoah University Community and the general public. The initial research project was approved by Shenandoah University’s Institutional Review Board, and the Government of Baabda District in Lebanon. For more information, Patrick Farris at pfarris@su.edu.
