The Legacy of a Manipulated Past with Jonathan Noyalas The Legacy of a Manipulated Past: The Lost Cause & White Supremacy. In the wake of George Floyd’s murder, calls for the removal of
Confederate monuments in public spaces became louder than they ever had before at any point in American history. Amid discussions, both in the news and social media outlets were references to the Lost Cause memory of the Civil War without little explanation as to all the Lost Cause entailed. While various memories of the Civil War exist–The Union Cause, The Emancipation Cause, The Reconciliation Cause, and the Lost Cause–the one that has persisted, perhaps somewhat remarkably, is the Lost Cause (the Confederate memory of our nation’s most tumultuous and defining moment). This presentation will explore the roots of the Lost Cause–one of the key tenets of which is that slavery was in no way responsible for the outbreak of armed conflict in 1861 and that those who were enslaved enjoyed their lot and remained loyal to their enslavers– its various dimensions, how organizations, most notably the United Daughters of the Confederacy, helped perpetuate the Lost Cause through controlling textbooks and monuments, why the Lost Cause has persisted for so long, and how African Americans resisted the Lost Cause narrative. Additionally, this discussion will provide a counter to the long-held belief that history is always written by the victors and that effective manipulation of historical reality not only obfuscates the past, but should raise awareness that manipulating the past ultimately comes with serious consequences for society.
