Virginia recently enacted a law intended to protect student privacy (Virginia Code § 23.1-405(C)). The law prohibits a university from disclosing a student’s email address, physical address or telephone number under the exception in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) for directory information or the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) unless the student has affirmatively consented in writing to the disclosure.
As part of SU’s efforts to comply with the law and protect student privacy, we have implemented a system that allows students to OPT IN to allow their email address to be shared with members of the SU community.
If a student wishes to have their email address shared with other members of the SU community, they must complete the following steps.
- Go the the following Google Group – SU_Public_Directory
- Once there click on Join Group
- On the box that pops up, click Join this Group.
- Click Save
Directory information may take up to 4 days to show up in the directory. Students that wish to leave the group can follow this same process, but instead click Leave Group.
