Name: Jeff Chuang ’16 BSN, RN
Role / Location: RN in Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at Johns Hopkins hospital
“My home unit (CCU) went into Biomode earlier this month but our Biocontainment Unit where I cross train, was active when Maryland numbers were in the single digits since March. It’s definitely difficult. Like everyone else, I miss my family and friends… My off days are spent in self isolation which has been rough, but with incubation and working with COVID+ patients, it’s a risk I don’t want to take.
But as healthcare workers, we see another sobering reality. An entire ICU filled with the entire institution’s ECMO units, everyone is sedated/paralyzed/vented, and multi pressed. Ages as low as 30-80. Folks who get better and extubate and recover. And folks who pass alone in the hospital because of visitor restrictions.
It’s been taxing physically and mentally. Appreciate the love and support from the public and while we empathize with the protests to reopen the government it’s maddening to see our reality that they have a hard time believing and taking our word for.”
