Susan Jenkins, Assistant Vice President of Marketing Communications

Susan Jenkins brings energy, creativity, and new ideas to Shenandoah to lead the OMC team in brand marketing and reputation efforts for the university. She develops results-oriented strategies and oversees projects for the website, social media, print, video and photography, and media outreach. Susan previously managed the communications office of a liberal arts college in Annapolis, Maryland, where she coordinated digital content and messaging across two campuses during a rebranding initiative and the announcement of a tuition reset and capital campaign. Other accomplishments over the past two decades include working as a reporter and editor for a newspaper, magazines, and community news websites in Maryland and Washington, D.C. She has a bachelor’s degree from George Mason University and a master’s in journalism and public affairs from American University.

Becky Layne is the media relations coordinator at Shenandoah University. In her role, Becky pitches university-driven ideas and stories to the media, while overseeing and coordinating all inquiries from outside press. She also serves a role in internal and external communications at Shenandoah. Becky received her Bachelor of Science in biology with a minor in English at Pennsylvania State University. She earned a master’s degree in journalism at the University of Missouri.

As Assistant Creative Director and Senior Graphic Designer at Shenandoah University, Colby Smith specializes in visual problem solving and typography. She conceptualizes and creates designs that convey Shenandoah’s brand strategy throughout print and electronic media. Additionally, she is responsible for helping manage the use of the university’s brand materials (i.e., logos and photos) and is the lead designer for the university’s alumni magazine. In 2009, she received her B.F.A. in graphic design from James Madison University. Colby’s interests outside of work include puppies, witty banter and chocolate chip cookies.

With a background in tracking, troubleshooting, and technical support, Cathy Wetzel supports the strategic and tactical functions of the Office of Marketing & Communications. Her organizational skills, love for analyzing details and developing processes makes her integral in problem solving and solution gathering. When she’s not researching, following projects on Quickbase or tracking media placements, she can be found at the fitness center, working on do-it-yourself home projects with her husband or planning vacations to spend time with her adult son.

Stephanie Mangino is a seasoned writer and editor with a background in radio, print and online journalism. She uses her multimedia experience to craft copy for a wide variety of university needs, including Shenandoah magazine’s print and online editions, booklets, brochures, flyers, blogs, and radio, online and print advertising. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Mary Washington College (now the University of Mary Washington).

Rebecca Ellis, Associate Director of Online Architecture

Rebecca Ellis is the Associate Director of Online Architecture at Shenandoah University. She manages the content, imagery, and web design of su.edu — Shenandoah University’s website — which reaches over 4 million people annually. Rebecca controls posts on the university’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn platforms, as well as facilitates Shenandoah’s 360 virtual reality campus tour and Google extension. She joined the university in 2014. Before coming to Shenandoah, Rebecca worked at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania where she managed the garden’s website and social media. Rebecca graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2013 where she earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration through a Marketing major with an Accounting minor and Art History concentration.

Emily Buhl, Digital Marketing Manager

Emily Buhl is the Digital Marketing Manager. Emily is responsible for creating and maintaining a strong digital and online presence for Shenandoah University. In her current role, Emily oversees digital advertising and analytic reporting, the SUN-e newsletter, Instagram, TikTok, and Youtube. In addition, she supervises the student communications and marketing coordinator to ensure OMC supports the initiatives of the Division of Student Affairs with marketing, messaging, and graphic needs. Emily started at Shenandoah in 2017 as the Electronic & Social Media Producer. Emily holds a Bachelor of Science in Sports and Recreation Management from James Madison University. Emily likes “all things cute,” spending time with family and volunteering in the Winchester community.

Katherine B. Werner, Student Communications and Marketing Coordinator

Katherine B. Werner is the Student Communications and Marketing Coordinator at Shenandoah University. Katherine oversees the Student Life social media pages, visual media around campus, other marketing efforts for the Division of Student Affairs. Before coming to Shenandnaoh, she worked as a Corporate Communications Associate at Stride, Inc. (formerly known as K12, Inc.), an online education organization. Katherine graduated from George Mason University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication: Public Relations and Media Production & Crisitism. Outside work, she enjoys runnings, practicing American Sign Language, eating sushi, and being with loved ones.
