Written by Barbara Hammond
In 2011 a feminist, humanist, activist punk performance group by the name of Pussy Riot appeared on the scene in Russia, capitalizing on social media to share their message with the world; “buying real estate in our minds.” A practice in Russia that is just not done. The PR voice against government practices and against the close ties between the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church and President Vladimir Putin grew, and its acclaim quickly caught fire in 2012 when they snuck into and performed on the altar of Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral, asking the Virgin Mary to save them from Putin. They were arrested, tried and convicted for “Hooliganism.” They were sent to labor camps for two years.
Written by Barbara Hammond, We Are Pussy Riot, is a kaleidoscope of images of history, philosophy and pop culture. Much of the play’s dialogue is inspired by trial transcripts and statements by public officials, including Patriarch Kirill and Vladimir Putin. The cast of characters—the “Yurodivy” or “Holy Fools” in the Orthodox tradition—are saints who “with imaginary insanity reveal the insanity of the world.” PUSSY RIOT is an idea and WE ARE PUSSY RIOT.
