Cartography is a contemporary theatrical work that explores the commonalities of migration, using both concrete and metaphorical maps to illustrate the migration of families from around the world. Created by acclaimed author and illustrator Christopher Myers and director Kaneza Schaal — and inspired by the artists’ work with refugee youth — the play charts the harrowing journeys of several young refugees searching for asylum. “A wonder of theater-making, Cartography is a production full of cracking storytelling” (DC Metro Theatre Arts), brought to vivid life with riveting design, innovative technology and fresh staging that powerfully conveys the interior and exterior lives of the young refugees whose journeys we follow. Through the inventive use of cell phones, audiences are invited to chart their own migration — considering the journeys they and their neighbors have taken, and the stories that have yet to be told.
This engagement of Cartography is made possible through the ArtsCONNECT program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Support for Cartography funded in part by Marion Park Lewis Foundation.
