Performance Highlights
“Jonathan Newman’s epic imagined ballet — based on a Hawaiian tale/legend — seems bound to become a major work in the Wind Ensemble repertoire. Hila Plitmann — two-time Grammy Award winner — is an incredibly innovative composer and a vocal force. Her vocal performances stir audiences on virtually every emotional level.”
– Dr. Tim Robblee, conductor
Q: What excites you about working on this program?
“This program includes incredibly innovative, evocative and colorful music. Pi’ilani and Ko’olau (Jonathan Newman’s piece) is currently exciting me as much or more than any piece I’ve done in the past few years.”
– Dr. Tim Robblee, conductor
Q: What are you excited about for audiences to experience?
“Music from three great and longtime friends: Jonathan Newman, Hila Plitmann and Roshanne Etezady. I think this program shows the Wind Ensemble at its most compelling and most diverse. What other program includes a rock band embedded in the ensemble, a Grammy Award-winning singer, a ukulele, conch shells and a typewriter?! Wind Ensembles are made compelling by the interaction of performers with living composers — especially composers who can imagine the ensemble as “something more” than it has been before.”
– Dr. Tim Robblee, conductor
