Join us for a captivating evening of music with acclaimed saxophonist Joseph Murphy in a special guest artist recital. Known for his extraordinary talent and expressive performances, Murphy will take you on a journey through dynamic and diverse works, including music Annika Socolofsky, Joan Tower, Viet Cuong, Paquito d’Rivera and more.
Meet the Artist
Joseph Murphy was the saxophone professor at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania from 1987 to 2022. At various times he was also director of bands and department chair, and taught a variety of courses. He received the bachelor’s degree in music education from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and master’s and doctoral degrees from Northwestern University. Dr. Murphy was the music director of Tiffin Calvert High School in Ohio from 1983 to 1985. In 1985/86, he received a Fulbright Award for a year of study in Bordeaux, France, where he received a Premier Prix. His June 1996 solo recital at Lincoln Center was positively reviewed in The New York Times. He has performed in all fifty states, eight Canadian provinces, twenty-five countries, and six continents. Murphy has also performed in New York, London, Berlin, Paris, Warsaw, Sydney, Athens, Tokyo, Bangkok, Johannesburg and at eleven World Saxophone Congresses. He has premiered over 100 new works and is a clinician for the Selmer Corporation and Rico Corporation and has recorded ten CDs. He has played with guitarist Matthew Slotkin in Duo Montagnard since 2002. Murphy’s memberships include Music Educators National Conference, Music Teachers National Association, North American Saxophone Alliance, National Association of College Wind & Percussion Instructors, Phi Mu Alpha and Kappa Kappa Psi.
