A Symphonic Odyssey from Romanticism to Modernism
Experience a dynamic journey through music that bridges the Romantic and Modern eras. This thrilling program features two works by Shenandoah Conservatory’s Director of Composition, Jonathan Newman—the high-energy Blow It Up, Start Again and the sweeping Meridian. These bold, contemporary pieces set the stage for Alberto Ginastera’s Variaciones Concertantes, a vibrant showcase of virtuosity and Argentine flair.
The evening also celebrates the incredible talent of two Student Soloists Competition winners: Gabrielle Gans shines in Korngold’s lush and cinematic Violin Concerto in D Major, op. 35, and Noah Alden Hardaway captivates with the brilliance of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Major, op. 26.
“I am extremely excited to perform as a soloist with the orchestra as I have been a part of the symphony for many years. It’s been a pretty stressful preparation process, but I feel very confident now and look forward to sharing this gorgeous piece. Korngold was actually a film composer and wrote this concerto as a compilation of his different soundtrack themes. Because of this, it sounds like each part of the piece is telling a story.”

“Prokofiev’s daredevil acrobatics belie a deep conflict between old Russia—folk lyricism, fairy tales, and Silver Age poetry—and (ill-fated) Soviet optimism in a new era of machines, industry, and order. And despite all that philosophy, the piece is just as fun to play as it is to listen to!”
