Directed by Kirsten Trump, this humorous and contemporary spin on the fifteenth-century morality play Everyman delves into the timeless allegory of death and the fate of the human soul, while also exploring the outrageous musings of twenty-first-century life.
Award-winning playwright Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins, known for his works An Octoroon and Appropriate, infuses this play with his signature wit and sensitivity. His masterful storytelling guides us through the universal human journey — birth, life and death — posing the poignant question: Are we ever truly ready?

Q: Are you collaborating with any special guests and ensembles?
“Yes! Dr. Matthew Niess is collaborating with us in the production by providing an element of live music for the show and featuring musicians from the jazz and commercial music program. Award-winning playwright Keith Glover (In Walks Ed, Coming of the Hurricane, Thunder Knocking at the Door) has also joined the production as an industry consultant to the cast and director, providing guidance regarding to the importance of the playwright’s language and tackling controversial topics and language in the show.”

Q: What are students learning or experiencing through this process?
“This is show is produced by the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting program’s Actors Collective, a special initiative in which the cast and crew are working together to build the world of the play, helping to self produce. They are also working on a comic contemporary adaptation of a medieval morality play, which allows them to study both genres and to understand the influence of historical drama in today’s world.”

Actors Collective
This production is presented by the Actors Collective, a unique initiative of Shenandoah Conservatory’s acting program that empowers students to collaboratively create and bring a play to life. With a focus on text and character development, this performance embraces minimal production elements to highlight the craft of storytelling and the actor’s work.
