The program opens with Carl Maria von Weber’s exhilarating Overture to Der Freischütz\, a cornerstone of German Romanticism whose vivid orchestration and dramatic storytelling helped shape the future of opera. \n\n\n\nThe orchestra is then joined by saxophone soloist Coleman Wright ’28 (D.M.A. in Performance) for Henri Tomasi’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra\, a colorful and expressive showcase that blends lyricism\, virtuosity and French sophistication. One of the most beloved works in the saxophone repertoire\, the concerto highlights the instrument’s remarkable range of character and emotion. \n\n\n\nThe evening concludes with Franz Schubert’s monumental Symphony No. 9 in C Major\, known as “The Great.” Expansive in scale and brimming with lyrical beauty\, rhythmic vitality and orchestral grandeur\, this beloved masterpiece showcases Schubert’s remarkable gift for melody and symphonic storytelling.
