SUMMARY:Nicolas Prost\, saxophone & Sébastien Paindestre\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Washington International Young Artists Music Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGoodson Chapel – Recital Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorder Jazz\n\n\n\nKnown for their electrifying performances and adventurous programming\, internationally acclaimed saxophonist Nicolas Prost and pianist Sébastien Paindestre present Border Jazz\, a program that pushes the boundaries of their instruments with dazzling technique and expressive depth. Featuring a vibrant mix of classical works and contemporary pieces\, this concert promises a thrilling journey through the versatility of the modern saxophone and jazz piano. \n\n\n\n“At the Border of Jazz” brings together classical concert artist Nicolas Prost and jazz musician Sébastien Paindestre in a bold and innovative collaboration. The program explores a richly imagined dialogue between classical and jazz traditions — blending refined\, composed works with openness to improvisation. \n\n\n\nPresented exclusively by this duo\, the repertoire consists entirely of works written specifically for Nicolas Prost and Sébastien Paindestre during their international tours across Europe\, the United States and Japan. The composers — among them Wayne Shorter\, Branford Marsalis\, Chris Potter\, Bob Mintzer\, James Carter\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Brad Mehldau\, John McLaughlin\, Dave Liebman\, Ibrahim Maalouf\, John Patitucci\, John Helliwell\, Bojan Z\, Daniel Humair\, Anne Paceo\, Baptiste Herbin\, Michel Portal\, Baptiste Trotignon\, Henri Texier\, Alban Darche\, Airelle Besson\, Céline Bonacina\, Pierrick Pédron\, Avishai Cohen\, Franck Tortiller\, François Jeanneau\, Riccardo Del Fra\, Dave Schroeder\, Nguyen Lê\, Laurent de Wilde\, Philippe Portejoie\, Olivier Calmel\, Stéphane Colin\, Rich Shemaria\, Leïla Olivesi\, Claude Barthélemy and Sébastien Paindestre — are leading voices in jazz and popular music who were invited to compose in a “classical” style. \n\n\n\nThese internationally recognized artists create a compelling fusion of musical worlds\, drawing new audiences through the interplay of genres — much like Gershwin and Bernstein in the twentieth century. In addition to these world premieres\, the program includes works from the chamber music repertoire reimagined in this hybrid style\, with composers such as Phil Woods\, Michel Petrucciani\, Tony Murena\, Chick Corea\, John Zorn and Radiohead. \n\n\n\n\nDigital Program\n\n\n\nShenandoah Conservatory uses digital programs for all performances. DESCRIPTION:Washington International Young Artists Music Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArmstrong Concert Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTimothy J. Robblee\, Artistic Director & Conductor \n\n\n\nMusic without Borders\n\n\n\nA powerful evening of music shaped by history\, displacement and artistic resilience begins with Kurt Weill’s Kleine Dreigroschenmusik\, a spirited suite drawn from The Threepenny Opera that blends cabaret flair with biting satire from a German émigré who became an American icon. The program continues with Gustav Holst’s majestic “Jupiter” from The Planets\, a work of sweeping grandeur by a British composer of German descent who changed his name during World War I amid rising anti-German sentiment. \n\n\n\nOffering a contemporary perspective\, Hymn of the Fallen by Erik Ruane ’27 (Bachelor of Music in Composition)\, winner of the 2025 William Averitt Prize for Excellence in Composition\, reflects on themes of loss and remembrance. The evening culminates in Paul Hindemith’s Symphony in B-flat for Band\, a cornerstone of the wind repertoire composed after Hindemith fled Nazi Germany for the United States. \n\n\n\nTogether\, these works form a compelling tribute to the enduring power of music across borders\, eras and identities. \n\n\n\n\nDigital Program\n\n\n\nShenandoah Conservatory uses digital programs for all performances. SUMMARY:Zoeter & Friends Faculty Chamber Music Concert
DESCRIPTION:Washington International Young Artists Music Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArmstrong Concert Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nINTENSITY\n\n\n\nJoin Garrick Zoeter and distinguished faculty from Shenandoah Conservatory for INTENSITY\, an electrifying evening of chamber music that explores the raw emotional power of sound. Featuring clarinetist Zoeter alongside Akemi Takayama (violin)\, Ko Sugiyama (violin)\, Doris Lederer (viola)\, Julian Schwarz (cello)\, Marika Bournaki (piano) and narrator John Bonanni\, this dynamic recital brings together celebrated performers and educators in a program that pulses with urgency\, lyricism and dramatic storytelling. \n\n\n\nThe evening showcases music that confronts grief\, memory\, faith and resilience with uncompromising force. Highlights include Prayer for solo clarinet by Kinan Azmeh\, the haunting Lamentation of the Bird and Remembrance for clarinet and piano by guest composer Polina Nazaykinskaya\, and Afilador by Andrea Casarrubios for clarinet and strings. Nazaykinskaya’s powerful Haim\, scored for narrator\, clarinet\, piano and string quartet\, weaves spoken word and music into a deeply human meditation\, while Sergei Prokofiev’s spirited Overture on Hebrew Themes adds a vibrant\, folkloric energy and rhythmic drive to the evening’s sweeping emotional landscape. \n\n\n\n“Intensity… it is all around us… in our lives… in the world… everywhere.” This concert embraces that conviction — music performed with utter commitment and fearless expression. Audiences will be moved\, challenged and inspired by an evening where artistry meets emotional immediacy\, and chamber music burns with blistering intensity. \n\n\n\n\nDigital Program\n\n\n\nShenandoah Conservatory uses digital programs for all performances. SUMMARY:Escher String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Washington International Young Artists Music Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArmstrong Concert Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRecognized for their profound musical insight and rare tonal beauty\, Escher String Quartet is one of the most celebrated chamber ensembles of its generation. Former BBC New Generation Artists and recipients of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant\, quartet members have captivated audiences across the globe\, from their regular appearances at London’s Wigmore Hall and the BBC Proms at Cadogan Hall to their designation as Season Artists with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York. \n\n\n\nKnown for its seamless ensemble work and emotionally rich interpretations\, Escher brings both technical mastery and expressive depth to a wide range of repertoire. Featuring Mozart’s radiant String Quartet No. 16 in E-flat Major\, K. 428; Barber’s stunning String Quartet in B Minor\, op. 11; and Dvořák’s warm and lyrical String Quartet No. 13 in G Major\, op. 106\, Escher presents a thoughtfully curated evening that highlights the group’s versatility and brilliance across centuries of string quartet literature. \n\n\n\nThis special performance also welcomes a new face to our community: cellist Brook Speltz\, a core member of the quartet\, will be in residence this spring as a member of our conservatory faculty. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a luminous evening of chamber music — and a powerful reflection of the extraordinary artists and visionaries inspiring our students and shaping the future of our field. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI’m delighted and honored to welcome my colleagues in Escher String Quartet to Shenandoah Conservatory! SUMMARY:Volterra Project Trio
DESCRIPTION:Washington International Young Artists Music Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGoodson Chapel – Recital Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGuest Artist Recital\n\n\n\nExperience the captivating artistry of the Volterra Project Trio in concert at Shenandoah Conservatory. Featuring internationally acclaimed musicians from the celebrated Volterra Project\, this dynamic ensemble brings together the rich sounds of the guitar in an evening of imaginative and genre-spanning chamber music. With a program that blends classical tradition with contemporary flair\, the trio promises a performance that is both intimate and exhilarating. \n\n\n\nFascinated by the storytelling power of the classical guitar\, the Volterra Project Trio explores narration without words. \n\n\n\nWith their new album Parole in Musica\, Antigoni Goni\, Luca Isolani and Maarten Vandenbemden bring their full range of color and expression to a program of music inspired by stories from stage\, screen and literature\, beginning with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet retold through Leonard Bernstein’s brilliant score as a tragedy on the streets of New York’s West Side\, and ending with Grieg’s incidental music to scenes from the exotic travels of Ibsen’s antihero Peer Gynt. Along the way\, we hear Luca Isolani’s own Note fuori campo (a homage to Nino Rota)\, the enchanted world of children’s stories brought to life in Ravel’s Mother Goose suite\, and two songs from Pornography\, a provocative musical by the Greek cultural icon — and iconoclast — Manos Hadjidakis. \n\n\n\nRecorded by British sound engineer John Taylor and distributed by NAXOS records\, Parole in Musica was released on all streaming platforms in May 2025. \n\n\n\nThis performance is presented in partnership with Marlow Guitar International. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDigital Program\n\n\n\nShenandoah Conservatory uses digital programs for all performances. Robblee\, Artistic Director & Conductor \n\n\n\nMystic Motion\n\n\n\nAn unforgettable evening awaits as the Wind Ensemble launches the concert with the bold imagination and sonic brilliance of Julia Wolfe’s Zigzag\, an encore performance of her high-energy\, rhythmically charged work pulsing with drive and daring. The program then turns inward with Reminiscence by Kathryn Salfelder\, a poignantly crafted work that evokes reflection\, memory and quiet strength. Closing out the performance is Michael Colgrass’s epic Winds of Nagual\, a mystical\, cinematic tour de force inspired by the writings of Carlos Castaneda that transports listeners on a vivid\, imaginative journey. \n\n\n\n\n\nLean In & Engage\n\n\n\n\n\nQ. \n\n\n\nWhat are students learning or experiencing through this process?\n\n\n\n\n\nColgrass’ Winds of Nagual is one of the masterworks in the wind ensemble genre. It requires a tremendous amount of soloistic skill\, a ton of varied ensemble colors and the ability to switch from style to style rapidly to advance the characters portrayed by the piece.” \n\n\n\n– Tim Robblee\, director \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQ. \n\n\n\nWhat are you excited about for audiences to experience?\n\n\n\n\n\nWinds of Nagual portrays three characters and their development through programmatic music\, related musical motives and a story portrayed both musically and on a projection for the audience to follow along.” \n\n\n\n– Tim Robblee\, director \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDigital Program\n\n\n\nShenandoah Conservatory uses digital programs for all performances.
