SUMMARY:Reflections: Invited Choreographers Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Pre-concert Talk with the Choreographers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOhrstrom-Bryant Theatre \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, February 6 at 7:30PMSaturday\, February 7 at 7:30PMSunday\, February 8 at 2:30PM \n\n\n\nThree renowned invited choreographers join the Dance Ensemble to present a captivating program of movement that transcends time and stirs the soul. This year’s performance bridges tradition and innovation with the visionary artistry of Dana Tai Soon Burgess\, Brandi Coleman and Doug Varone. \n\n\n\n\nDana Tai Soon Burgess\, known internationally as the “Diplomat of Dance\,” is the founder of the Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company and a celebrated American choreographer whose works explore the breadth of human experience with depth and emotional resonance.\n\n\n\nBrandi Coleman is an Emmy-Award winning artist and former associate artistic director of Jump Rhythm® Jazz Project whose choreography emphasizes the rhythmic synergy of body and music.\n\n\n\nAs the artistic force behind Doug Varone and Dancers\, Doug Varone is an award-winning choreographer and director whose work spans dance\, theater\, opera and more.\n\n\n\n\nThe program features a setting of Hyphen\, a critically acclaimed work by Burgess that explores identity and includes projections by iconic video artist Nam June Paik. Also featured is MASS by Varone\, a powerful and dynamic work set on Shenandoah dance students by Brad Beakes\, rehearsal director for Doug Varone and Dancers. Rounding out the program is Hear My Cry by Coleman\, a compelling restaging of her 2022 work Critical Mass that features embodied rhythm and vocalization\, and invites audiences to feel joyful\, empowered and deeply connected to the pulse that moves us all. \n\n\n\nThe concert also includes an encore presentation of Downstream by acclaimed choreographer Maleek Washington\, presented in November 2025 as part of the senior showcase. Created in collaboration with the dancers\, the work celebrates the power of community and embodies both ritual and the search for connection to something greater than ourselves. \n\n\n\nSuggested Show Rating: PG \n\n\n\nThis production contains theatrical haze. \n\n\n\nThis performance is made possible by the Lewis Endowed Fund for Visiting Dance Artists. \n\n\n\n\n\nMeet the Guest Choreographers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDana Tai Soon Burgess\n\n\n\nDana Tai Soon Burgess is a leading American choreographer and cultural figure known worldwide as the “Diplomat of Dance.” In 1992\, he founded the Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company (DTSBDC)\, Washington\, D.C.’s preeminent modern dance company now in its 32nd season. The Washington Post Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Sarah Kaufman says of Burgess\, “Not only a Washington prize\, but a national dance treasure.” \n\n\n\nBurgess creates contemporary modern dance works that explore the joy\, sorrow and beauty of the human experience. He has served as a Cultural Ambassador for the U.S. State Department for over two decades. Burgess has been awarded three Fulbright Senior scholarships for dance and the Selma Jeanne Cohen Dance Lecture Award. \n\n\n\nIn 2016\, Burgess was named the Smithsonian Institution’s first-ever Choreographer-in-Residence. From 2016 to 2023\, he created new works inspired by museum exhibitions\, participated in public discussions about dance and art and designed educational programming. The exploration of dance and art is deeply rooted for Burgess. The son of two visual artists he has always approached the stage as a canvas\, and the dancers as brush strokes. Burgess was one of only three artists featured in the Smithsonian Institution’s “A Korean American Century” (2013)\, an exhibition highlighting the history and achievements of Korean Americans in the United States. He was also highlighted in “Dancing the Dream\,” (2013 to 2014) the Smithsonian’s first exhibition on American dance. Three portraits of Burgess are part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian. He has created works for The National Gallery of Art\, The Noguchi Museum\, The National Museum of Asian Art\, The National Portrait Gallery and The UNM Art Museum\, to name a few. \n\n\n\nHe has served as a Mayoral appointed commissioner for the D.C. Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander Americans and the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Burgess is the author of Chino and the Dance of the Butterfly: A Memoir by University of New Mexico Press and the editor of and contributor to the dance history textbook Milestones in Dance History by Routledge/Francis & Taylor. He is the host of Slantpodcast.com which focuses on the Asian American arts experience. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrandi Coleman\n\n\n\nBrandi Coleman is an assistant professor in the Division of Dance at Southern Methodist University where she teaches Jump Rhythm® Technique\, a jazz-rhythm-based movement approach that transforms the moving body into a rhythm-driven percussion instrument. She was a performing member\, rehearsal director and associate artistic director of Jump Rhythm Jazz Project (JRJP)\, a Chicago-based dance company founded by Billy Siegenfeld. She received an Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Excellence On Camera/Performer for her work in the Emmy Award-winning documentary\, Jump Rhythm Jazz Project: Getting There\, and has toured nationally and internationally with JRJP to Finland\, Italy and Canada. As a teaching and creative artist\, she has led more than forty choreographic and teaching residencies at universities nationwide and internationally. Her pedagogy and creative work honor the foundational and fundamental relationship between jazz music and jazz dance. Her choreography has been presented at venues across the United States and internationally at the Aratani Theatre (Los Angeles)\, Newport Jazz Festival (Newport)\, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks (Canada)\, Southern Theater (Minneapolis)\, Links Hall (Chicago)\, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts\, River Center Theatre for the Performing Arts (Baton Rouge)\, the Winspear Opera House\, Moody Performance Hall and the Eisemann Center for Performing Arts (Dallas)\, SUNY Brockport\, James Madison University\, Salve Regina University\, Northwestern University\, Stephens College\, Carthage College\, University of Dubuque\, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Southern Methodist University. \n\n\n\nHer writing\, “Performing Gender: Disrupting Performance Norms for Women in Jazz Dance Through Gender-Inclusive\, Human-Centric Choreography\,” is included in the book Rooted Jazz Dance: Africanist Aesthetics and Equity in the Twenty-First Century (University Press of Florida\, 2022). She earned a Master of Fine Arts in Performing Arts: Choreography from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoug Varone\n\n\n\nAward-winning choreographer and director Doug Varone works in dance\, theater\, opera\, film and fashion. He is a passionate educator and articulate advocate for dance. By any measure\, his work is extraordinary for its emotional range\, kinetic breadth and the many arenas in which he works. His New York City-based Doug Varone and Dancers has been commissioned and presented to critical acclaim by leading international venues for over three decades. Since its founding in 1986\, Doug Varone and Dancers has commanded attention for its expansive vision\, versatility\, and technical prowess. On tour\, the company has performed in more than 125 cities in forty-five states across the United States and in Europe\, Asia\, Canada and South America. Stages include the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, Lincoln Center\, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)\, London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall\, Moscow’s Stanislavsky Theater\, Buenos Aires’ Teatro San Martin\, the Venice Biennale\, and at Jacob’s Pillow\, American Dance Festival and Bates Dance Festival. Varone\, his dancers\, and designers have been honored with eleven New York Dance and Performance (“Bessie”) Awards. \n\n\n\nIn the concert dance world\, Varone has created a body of works globally. Commissions include the Paul Taylor’s American Modern Dance Company\, The Limón Company\, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago\, Rambert Dance Company (London)\, Martha Graham Dance Company\, Dancemakers (Canada)\, Batsheva Dance Company (Israel)\, Bern Ballet (Switzerland) and An Creative (Japan)\, among others. In addition\, his dances have been staged on more than 100 college and university programs around the country. \n\n\n\nIn opera\, Doug Varone is in demand as both a director and choreographer. Among his four productions at the Metropolitan Opera are Salome with its Dance of the Seven Veils\, the world premiere of Tobias Picker’s An American Tragedy\, Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps\, designed by David Hockney\, and Hector Berlioz’s Les Troyens. Recent projects include directing and choreographing MASTERVOICES production of Dido and Aeneas at New York’s City Center\, starring Tony Award winners Kelli O’Hara and Victoria Clark\, and staging Julia Wolfe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning oratorio\, Anthracite Fields for the Westminster Choir and the Bang on a Can All-Stars. \n\n\n\nVarone received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Purchase College where he was awarded the President’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2007. Numerous honors and awards include a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship\, an Obie Award (Lincoln Center’s Orpheus and Euridice)\, the Jerome Robbins Fellowship at the Bogliasco Institute in Italy\, two individual Bessie Awards\, a Doris Duke Artist Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Dance Guild. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDigital Program\n\n\n\nShenandoah Conservatory uses digital programs for all performances. SUMMARY:Ear Candy: EDGE Ensemble with Conservatory Choir & Julia Wolfe
DESCRIPTION:Pre-concert Talk with the Choreographers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArmstrong Concert Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEar Candy New Music Festival\n\n\n\nEDGE Ensemble with Conservatory Choir & Julia Wolfe\n\n\n\nAs part of Shenandoah Conservatory’s Ear Candy New Music Festival\, the Conservatory Choir joins Shenandoah’s in-house new music group EDGE Ensemble for an exploration of the masterful chamber and vocal music of MacArthur “Genius Grant” and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Julia Wolfe\, alongside works by young contemporary composers curated personally by the composer herself. \n\n\n\nThe concert features powerful choral settings such as Guard My Tongue and You breathe\, the lively percussion work Dark Full Ride\, and Wolfe’s seminal Bang on a Can All-Stars sextet Lick\, all showcasing her intense\, genre-blurring musical voice. \n\n\n\nMusic and conversation unfold together throughout the evening as Wolfe joins Jonathan Newman for a live\, in-program discussion reflecting on the creative impulses behind the works performed. \n\n\n\nThe program also introduces vibrant music by emerging New York-based composers Robert Honstein and Shelley Washington\, placing bold new voices in dialogue with Wolfe’s established catalog. The concert offers a dynamic celebration of boundary-pushing new music and the virtuosic artistry of Shenandoah Conservatory’s student and faculty performers. \n\n\n\n\n\nMeet the Guest Composer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJulia Wolfe’s music is distinguished by an intense physicality and a relentless power that pushes performers to extremes and demands attention from the audience. She draws inspiration from folk\, classical and rock genres\, bringing a modern sensibility to each while simultaneously tearing down the walls between them. \n\n\n\nIn addition to receiving the 2015 Pulitzer Prize in Music\, Wolfe was a 2016 MacArthur Fellow. She received the 2015 Herb Alpert Award in Music and was named Musical America’s 2019 Composer of the Year. Wolfe is co-founder/co-artistic director of New York’s legendary music collective Bang on a Can\, and she is Artistic Director of NYU Steinhardt Music Composition. \n\n\n\nHer music is published by Red Poppy Music and G. Ricordi & Co.\, New York (ASCAP) and is distributed worldwide by the Universal Music Publishing Group. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLean In & Engage\n\n\n\n\n\nQ. \n\n\n\nWhat are students learning or experiencing through this process?\n\n\n\n\n\nMusic of all sorts is produced out in the world\, and our students need to learn how to play all of it. These intensive productions are a great opportunity for them to grapple with ways of playing and rehearsing with which they might be unfamiliar\, and to coach with not just a living composer\, but one of the most successful and lauded ones in the world.” \n\n\n\n– Jonathan Newman \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQ. \n\n\n\nWhat excites you about working on this project?\n\n\n\n\n\nFor this festival\, I am always most excited about almost the entirety of our conservatory’s music community getting involved in the production of world-class new music to present to a part of our community which may not always experience it.” \n\n\n\n– Jonathan Newman \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQ. \n\n\n\nWhat are you excited about for audiences to experience?\n\n\n\n\n\nI’m excited to share Julia’s extraordinary and unique music with our community. She is a world-class artist and renowned composer writing consistently intriguing and muscular new works based on important themes. She is also a person of warmth and generosity\, and I look forward to our students and patrons meeting her in person.” \n\n\n\n– Jonathan Newman \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDigital Program\n\n\n\nShenandoah Conservatory uses digital programs for all performances. The Wind Ensemble (Timothy J. Robblee\, conductor) takes the stage to perform Zigzag\, a recently commissioned piece by a consortium that included Shenandoah Conservatory that is a high-energy\, rhythmically charged work pulsing with drive and daring. \n\n\n\nBringing the evening to an electrifying close\, Wolfe’s Flower Power unleashes a genre-defying surge of rhythmic vitality and countercultural spirit\, featuring the Symphony Orchestra with special guest soloists Garrick Zoeter (clarinet)\, Colin Davin (electric guitar)\, Karlyn Viña (drums)\, Eoín Fleming ’20\, ’22 (electric organ)\, Christian Hartman ’26 (cello) and Donovan Stokes (double bass). \n\n\n\nPart of a weekend celebrating the visionary voices shaping today’s musical landscape — while honoring the masters who paved the way — this performance showcases two of Wolfe’s newest large-ensemble works and promises to surprise\, challenge and inspire. \n\n\n\n\n\nMeet the Guest Composer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJulia Wolfe’s music is distinguished by an intense physicality and a relentless power that pushes performers to extremes and demands attention from the audience. SUMMARY:Wind Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Pre-concert Talk with the Choreographers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArmstrong Concert Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTimothy J. Robblee\, Artistic Director & Conductor \n\n\n\nMystic Motion\n\n\n\nAn unforgettable evening awaits as the Wind Ensemble launches the concert with the bold imagination and sonic brilliance of Julia Wolfe’s Zigzag\, an encore performance of her high-energy\, rhythmically charged work pulsing with drive and daring. The program then turns inward with Reminiscence by Kathryn Salfelder\, a poignantly crafted work that evokes reflection\, memory and quiet strength. Closing out the performance is Michael Colgrass’s epic Winds of Nagual\, a mystical\, cinematic tour de force inspired by the writings of Carlos Castaneda that transports listeners on a vivid\, imaginative journey. \n\n\n\n\n\nLean In & Engage\n\n\n\n\n\nQ. \n\n\n\nWhat are students learning or experiencing through this process?\n\n\n\n\n\nColgrass’ Winds of Nagual is one of the masterworks in the wind ensemble genre. It requires a tremendous amount of soloistic skill\, a ton of varied ensemble colors and the ability to switch from style to style rapidly to advance the characters portrayed by the piece.” \n\n\n\n– Tim Robblee\, director \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQ. \n\n\n\nWhat are you excited about for audiences to experience?\n\n\n\n\n\nWinds of Nagual portrays three characters and their development through programmatic music\, related musical motives and a story portrayed both musically and on a projection for the audience to follow along.” \n\n\n\n– Tim Robblee\, director \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDigital Program\n\n\n\nShenandoah Conservatory uses digital programs for all performances. SUMMARY:Volterra Project Trio
DESCRIPTION:Pre-concert Talk with the Choreographers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGoodson Chapel – Recital Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGuest Artist Recital\n\n\n\nExperience the captivating artistry of the Volterra Project Trio in concert at Shenandoah Conservatory. Featuring internationally acclaimed musicians from the celebrated Volterra Project\, this dynamic ensemble brings together the rich sounds of the guitar in an evening of imaginative and genre-spanning chamber music. With a program that blends classical tradition with contemporary flair\, the trio promises a performance that is both intimate and exhilarating. \n\n\n\nFascinated by the storytelling power of the classical guitar\, the Volterra Project Trio explores narration without words. \n\n\n\nWith their new album Parole in Musica\, Antigoni Goni\, Luca Isolani and Maarten Vandenbemden bring their full range of color and expression to a program of music inspired by stories from stage\, screen and literature\, beginning with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet retold through Leonard Bernstein’s brilliant score as a tragedy on the streets of New York’s West Side\, and ending with Grieg’s incidental music to scenes from the exotic travels of Ibsen’s antihero Peer Gynt. Along the way\, we hear Luca Isolani’s own Note fuori campo (a homage to Nino Rota)\, the enchanted world of children’s stories brought to life in Ravel’s Mother Goose suite\, and two songs from Pornography\, a provocative musical by the Greek cultural icon — and iconoclast — Manos Hadjidakis. \n\n\n\nRecorded by British sound engineer John Taylor and distributed by NAXOS records\, Parole in Musica was released on all streaming platforms in May 2025. \n\n\n\nThis performance is presented in partnership with Marlow Guitar International. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDigital Program\n\n\n\nShenandoah Conservatory uses digital programs for all performances. SUMMARY:Our Town
DESCRIPTION:Pre-concert Talk with the Choreographers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGlaize Studio Theatre \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, March 26 at 7:30PMFriday\, March 27 at 7:30PMSaturday\, March 28 at 2:30PMSaturday\, March 28 at 7:30PMSunday\, March 29 at 2:30PMSunday\, March 29 at 7:30PM \n\n\n\nWritten by Thornton Wilder \n\n\n\nDirected by Kirsten Trump \n\n\n\nHailed by The New York Times as “Thornton Wilder’s masterpiece\,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning Our Town is a timeless American classic that continues to move audiences with its power and depth. Praised by Edward Albee as “the greatest American play ever written\,” this beautifully simple and profound drama — directed by Kirsten Trump — brings the small town of Grover’s Corners to life in three unforgettable acts: “Daily Life\,” “Love and Marriage” and “Death and Eternity.” \n\n\n\nWilder broke through many theatrical conventions of the day in his study of the human experience. His concept asks the audience to use its own imagination\, as the play strips away traditional scenic elements and introduces the use of a narrator to guide us through this enchanting and familiar tale. We are reminded\, once again\, how precious and beautiful our time here on earth truly is. \n\n\n\nSuggested Show Rating: PG \n\n\n\nThis production explores death and dying\, pregnancy and childbirth. The performance also includes theatrical haze and fog\, as well as flashing and strobe lighting effects. DESCRIPTION:Pre-concert Talk with the Choreographers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOhrstrom-Bryant Theatre \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, March 27 at 7:30PMSaturday\, March 28 at 7:30PMSunday\, March 29 at 2:30PM \n\n\n\nCelebrate an evening of bold\, original dance as Shenandoah’s Dance Ensemble brings a dynamic range of movement styles to the stage. Blending contemporary\, commercial and modern forms\, the program highlights the versatility and artistry of our dancers through works by faculty choreographers Lindsay Browning\, Tiffanie Carson\, Ben Howard and Katherine Zukeri\, alongside alumna Maggie DeFrees ’23 (B.A. in Dance\, B.F.A. in Theatre Design & Production – Scenic Design). \n\n\n\nFrom the pulsing\, high-energy world of Carson’s DRIP — where rave culture and house dance collide in a celebration of chaos and unity — to Browning’s reflective and poetic The Path Beneath Our Feet\, the performance invites audiences into a rich landscape of connection\, memory and human experience. Howard’s Elegos offers a haunting meditation on grief and resilience\, and DeFrees’ RE: Versed explores time\, perspective and the cyclical nature of growth. Bringing the program to a vibrant close\, Disco’s Revenge delivers a bold\, high-octane finale\, channeling the infectious energy and spirit of the dance floor into a thrilling contemporary work that leaves audiences energized and exhilarated. \n\n\n\nTogether\, these works create a compelling journey — visceral\, thoughtful and deeply expressive — showcasing the power of dance to move\, challenge and inspire. \n\n\n\nSuggested Show Rating: PG-13 \n\n\n\nThis production contains theatrical haze and strobe light effects. \n\n\n\n\nDigital Program\n\n\n\nShenandoah Conservatory uses digital programs for all performances. SUMMARY:Zoeter & Friends Faculty Chamber Music Concert
DESCRIPTION:Pre-concert Talk with the Choreographers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArmstrong Concert Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nINTENSITY\n\n\n\nJoin Garrick Zoeter and distinguished faculty from Shenandoah Conservatory for INTENSITY\, an electrifying evening of chamber music that explores the raw emotional power of sound. Featuring clarinetist Zoeter alongside Akemi Takayama (violin)\, Ko Sugiyama (violin)\, Doris Lederer (viola)\, Julian Schwarz (cello)\, Marika Bournaki (piano) and narrator John Bonanni\, this dynamic recital brings together celebrated performers and educators in a program that pulses with urgency\, lyricism and dramatic storytelling. \n\n\n\nThe evening showcases music that confronts grief\, memory\, faith and resilience with uncompromising force. Highlights include Prayer for solo clarinet by Kinan Azmeh\, the haunting Lamentation of the Bird and Remembrance for clarinet and piano by guest composer Polina Nazaykinskaya\, and Afilador by Andrea Casarrubios for clarinet and strings. Nazaykinskaya’s powerful Haim\, scored for narrator\, clarinet\, piano and string quartet\, weaves spoken word and music into a deeply human meditation\, while Sergei Prokofiev’s spirited Overture on Hebrew Themes adds a vibrant\, folkloric energy and rhythmic drive to the evening’s sweeping emotional landscape. \n\n\n\n“Intensity… it is all around us… in our lives… in the world… everywhere.” This concert embraces that conviction — music performed with utter commitment and fearless expression. Audiences will be moved\, challenged and inspired by an evening where artistry meets emotional immediacy\, and chamber music burns with blistering intensity. \n\n\n\n\nDigital Program\n\n\n\nShenandoah Conservatory uses digital programs for all performances. Robblee\, Artistic Director & Conductor \n\n\n\nMusic without Borders\n\n\n\nA powerful evening of music shaped by history\, displacement and artistic resilience begins with Kurt Weill’s Kleine Dreigroschenmusik\, a spirited suite drawn from The Threepenny Opera that blends cabaret flair with biting satire from a German émigré who became an American icon. The program continues with Gustav Holst’s majestic “Jupiter” from The Planets\, a work of sweeping grandeur by a British composer of German descent who changed his name during World War I amid rising anti-German sentiment. \n\n\n\nOffering a contemporary perspective\, Hymn of the Fallen by Erik Ruane ’27 (Bachelor of Music in Composition)\, winner of the 2025 William Averitt Prize for Excellence in Composition\, reflects on themes of loss and remembrance. The evening culminates in Paul Hindemith’s Symphony in B-flat for Band\, a cornerstone of the wind repertoire composed after Hindemith fled Nazi Germany for the United States. \n\n\n\nTogether\, these works form a compelling tribute to the enduring power of music across borders\, eras and identities. \n\n\n\n\nDigital Program\n\n\n\nShenandoah Conservatory uses digital programs for all performances.
