Graduate Fellow for the Center for Civic Engagement
The Center for Civic Engagement offers many ways for Shenandoah University students to be a part of their community through service projects such as tutoring, building homes, volunteering at local food pantries, and much more. The Center for Civic Engagement also connects faculty with many local agencies to incorporate service-learning opportunities into their syllabi. Graduate Fellow Duties
The Graduate Fellow will engage Shenandoah University students, faculty, and staff to support the mission and goals of the Center for Civic Engagement and the mission of the University as a whole. The Graduate Fellow will support the operations of the Center in addition to delving into a community engagement project, as designated by the Director of the Center for Civic Engagement. Projects may include but are not limited to: developing an array of workshops, small group discussions, lectures, and individual meetings with students to address the opportunity for civil discourse; and scholarly research around topics of social concern. The Graduate Fellow will also be expected to use means of electronic marketing for the the Center.
Graduate Fellow Qualifications
- Individuals may only apply for the fellowship after they have been accepted into a Shenandoah University graduate degree program
- Student must be interested in the furtherance of the missions of the Center for Civic Engagement and of Shenandoah University
- A strong interest in community engagement is crucial
- Student must be able to provide own transportation to community events
- Graduate Fellow will be asked to demonstrate excellent writing skills, capability of working independently, pose research capability, creativity, and high inter-personal skills, and innovative scholarship
- Candidate must demonstrate proficiency in social media, web design, and web maintenance
Fellowship Terms
- 1-2-year commitment
- Runs August – May each year
- Fellow reports directly to the Director of the Center for Civic Engagement
- Financial benefit includes a tuition reimbursement for an expected 20 hours of activity per week
- Position location is in the Center for Civic Engagement, Cooley 114
Application Process
- Submit a resume and an essay addressing interest in supporting community engagement serve@su.edu.
- Submit a list of credits completed in the graduate program and cumulative GPA to date
- Provide a letter of recommendation from a faculty member who is currently very familiar with the candidate’s performance. Submit the letter to serve@su.edu.
- Provide professional samples of social media, web design, and web maintenance
- Interview with Director of the Center for Civic Engagement
