Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program

Shenandoah University Nursing Professor Marian Newton, Ph.D., was one of the first people in Virginia to be a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and she shares her expertise in the field as the coordinator of the university’s Psych NP program. Students can become Psych NPs in several ways through Shenandoah: MSN Psychiatric Mental-Health Practitioner (PMHNP), Psychiatric Mental-Health Nurse Practitioner Post Graduate Certificate, and the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Initiative. The initiative allows graduate nursing students attending collaborating schools receive a Psychiatric Mental-Health Nurse Practitioner certificate after completing the 25 credit hours of graduate Psychiatric Mental-Health Nurse Practitioner courses from Shenandoah University as they are completing their graduate degree from their home school of nursing. Upon successful completion of this program, the student will receive a graduate degree from their home nursing school and a Certificate in Psychiatric Mental-Health Nurse Practitioner from Shenandoah University. The graduate will then be eligible to sit for the American Nurses Credentialing Certification PMHNP Examination. The initiative partners with Marshall University and West Virginia Wesleyan in West Virginia, as well as James Madison University and Old Dominion University in Virginia. The summer 2020 cohort is the biggest yet! If you’re a nurse with a BSN or a nurse with an advanced degree interested in adding another speciality, Shenandoah’s program is made for you.
