Program outcomes are the focus for ShenEd program assessment.
Program assessment measures students’ cumulative learning across courses at the end of the program. Aggregated data helps to inform effectiveness of overall program. The following demonstrates how assessment data will be collected and used to help inform future programmatic decisions.
The diagram below demonstrates the assessment process for the ShenEd Program including:
- Program level assessment (NSSE, Integrative Learning Survey)
- Course level assessment (performance indicators as measured by common rubrics, Town Hall Integrative Learning Rubric)
- Student level assessment (course embedded assignments as measured by common rubrics)

NSSE – The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)
NSSE allows SU to review levels of student engagement in a variety of areas as well as examine amount of time and effort students put into their studies and other activities. Reflective and integrative learning is a category found within the Academic Challenge section in NSSE. The survey is distributed at the end of students’ first year and senior year.
Integrative Learning Survey
Questions from NSSE will be reformatted as open-ended questions and compiled into a shorter survey that will be given to sophomores at the end of the Spring semester.
Common Rubrics
Rubrics will be used for each ShenEd Region. We will conduct rubric norming workshops with a random sample of student work. To ensure that the rubrics are valid and reliable each year, the ShenEd committee will lead rubric norming sessions starting May 2019 assessment week. If the ShenEd faculty in a Region finds discrepancies, a group discussion will provide answers to questions such as: Why did you get this score? Why do you think this assignment is proficient? Are criteria used within the rubrics free of discipline biases? These discussions will help ensure that the rubrics are being appropriately applied to student assignments (Rubrics posted in ShenEd workshop google drive and will be available on Canvas)
