About SU-BRIES

With a focus on environmental quality, community education and natural places in the Shenandoah Valley region, SU-BRIES is a project of Shenandoah University’s Environmental Studies Department.

Originally known as the Blue Ridge Institute for Environmental Studies, BRIES was founded in 1991 by members of the university’s biology and education faculty.

This website reflects partnerships with government agencies, citizens organizations, businesses, and other academic programs at Shenandoah.

Website development is supported by a grant from the Virginia Environmental Endowment, and by gifts to Shenandoah University for environmental research and community outreach.
