James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s modern classic brings together favorite fairytale characters to create a musical that is both timeless and relevant.
Both enchanting and touching, the Tony Award-winning book and score follows multiple storylines that merge: a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them with disastrous results.
One of Sondheim’s most popular works, Into the Woods is a musically sophisticated show infused with touches of dark comedy, and featuring unforgettable songs and fantastical design elements that create a magical and mystical world.

Glimpses of the Creative Process
“In this production of Into the Woods, we’re exploring the poignant desperation of characters whose lives hinge on the fulfillment of a wish. We’re not just venturing into the fairy-tale woods; we’re navigating the complex landscape of human vulnerability and resilience. It’s an evocative experience that delves into the heart of what drives us — both the wishes we make and the paths we choose, and sometimes, are forced to take.”
“In this rendition, the ensemble — employing the essence of a ‘steamer trunk’ production — unfolds Sondheim and Lapine’s rich tapestry with resourceful minimalism, focusing on inventive, compact elements and imaginative techniques to illustrate the intricate dance between desire and consequence.”

What are students learning or experiencing through this process?
“In staging Into the Woods, students are diving deep into the masterful collaboration of Sondheim and Lapine, grappling with their intricate storytelling, complex characterizations and profound musical language. They’re not only mastering challenging rhythms and harmonies but are also deciphering layers of emotional resonance within the songs and narrative. Moreover, they are navigating the moral complexities inherent in the story, which pushes them to examine choices, consequences and personal reflections.”
“Beyond the content of the play itself, students are enhancing critical life and career skills. They’re learning the importance of collaboration and teamwork, understanding how to communicate effectively, and practicing adaptability and problem-solving in real-time as they adjust to challenges and unexpected changes.
