The Book of Life
Odile Gakire “Kiki” Katese & Women Drummers of Rwanda
Co-produced by Volcano, Canada and the Woman Cultural Centre, Rwanda
Following rave reviews at the 2022 Edinburgh International Festival, The Book of Life comes to the U.S. for an exclusive tour that will inspire and transform audiences. Powerfully written and performed by Rwandan writer and activist Odile Gakire “Kiki” Katese, The Book of Life is based on letters written by the survivors and perpetrators of Rwanda’s genocide — ordinary people, addressed to those who are gone. Through storytelling, hand-crafted projections and original live music by the internationally acclaimed Women Drummers of Rwanda, the production leads audiences through a remarkable journey of how to rebuild a deep understanding of life in the aftermath of incalculable loss. Hailed as “magnificent” by The Scotsman, The Book of Life ultimately offers hope — unlocking life after trauma and finding a humane way forward full of joy.
Support for this production of The Book of Life has been provided by: The Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council and the Kingfisher Foundation.
