L’enfant et les sortilèges (The Child and the Spells)

Libretto by Colette
Prepare for an evening of sweeping emotion and fantastical wonder as Main Stage Opera presents a captivating early twentieth-century double bill, directed by Kit Wilder: Giacomo Puccini’s deeply moving Suor Angelica paired with Maurice Ravel’s whimsical L’enfant et les sortilèges (The Child and the Spells).
Premiering just six years apart (1919 and 1925), these two operatic masterpieces offer two brilliantly contrasting lenses into the music of the era. Under Wilder’s direction, audiences will first be swept away by the devastating lyrical beauty and profound tragedy of Puccini’s cloistered tale of maternal love, loss and redemption, followed by the playful charm and dazzling orchestration of Ravel’s enchanted world, where a mischievous child’s bedroom comes colorfully to life.
