Shenandoah New Music
Film Club
It’s movie night at the Bright Box! Grab a drink off the Bright Box menu, snag some free popcorn and settle in for an electrifying evening where live music meets the big screen.
The EDGE Ensemble brings you a one-of-a-kind cinematic concert, performing bold, boundary-pushing music by today’s top living composers—all set to films, videos and projections. Highlights include selections from The Violin with music written by Grammy-nominated composer Anna Clyne and animations created by New York-based artist and MacDowell Fellow Josh Dorman; Benny by Evan Williams, a striking fusion of piano, interactive electronics and video inspired by Elton John’s Bennie and the Jets; and works for video and short silent films by Jonathan Newman, Dan Visconti and Andrew Earle Simpson.
All this unfolds in the Bright Box Theater, Winchester’s intimate, cocktail-table-style venue where every seat is the best in the house. Arrive early to grab a craft beer, cocktail or snack—the bar opens one hour before showtime.
Lean In & Engage
Q: What is the EDGE Ensemble?
The EDGE Ensemble is a mixed student/faculty ensemble with students performing music by living composers in collaboration with their teachers, as well as with students and faculty collaborating on live sound and concert production.
Q: What are students learning or experiencing through this process?
“The EDGE Ensemble provides students exposure and performance opportunities for music far outside the standard repertoire, often constructed and played in ways also far outside standard performance practice. In this particular program I am excited for our students to learn how to work through the technical challenges of performing along with picture!”
– Jonathan Newman, director
Q: What excites you about this program?
“I love the interdisciplinary theme, and that we are not just presenting visuals with one or two of the pieces, but with the entire program to make an evening of music tied together by picture. I am also excited for audiences to experience the wide variety of visuals (silent films, thought-provoking videos and animations) and the different musical styles by living composers that accompany them.”
– Jonathan Newman, director
