Music in Motion

The Wind Ensemble gets moving in a unique program featuring music (and musicians) in motion with a dynamic range of works for winds. Highlights include a performance by guest soloist and Shenandoah Conservatory’s new Assistant Professor of Percussion Karlyn Viña, a percussionist hailed for her “dazzling” and “incisive” performances.

Performance Note for Audience Members

Musicians will be periodically performing in the aisles during this performance. Some aisle seats have been blocked off to provide additional distancing between musicians and audience members. Per Shenandoah Conservatory’s COVID-19 Safety Measures & Masking Policy, performing artists are permitted to perform unmasked only if they are fully vaccinated and have tested negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours of their performance. Metamorphosis

The Wind Ensemble presents a program featuring a range of Shenandoah’s own extraordinary music faculty. Highlights include Paul Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis; D.J. Sparr’s Ella que Llora featuring soprano Stephanie Higgins; and Pann’s Double Concerto for Clarinet and Saxophone featuring clarinetist Garrick Zoeter and saxophonist Timothy Roberts.

Breath

Shenandoah Conservatory’s Wind Ensemble joins the choral ensembles, under the direction of Matt Oltman and Hillary Ridgley, in a program that celebrates breath and the simple, but life-sustaining, need to breathe. Through a variety of works for voice and winds, the program explores how breath, when taken collectively, satisfies the soul-sustaining need to make music together. The evening culminates with an inspirational version of Shenandoah for combined winds and voices.

Wind Ensemble

The Wind Ensemble presents a mix of old and new works highlighting the unique qualities of percussion, wind and brass instruments. Program highlights include Antonín Dvořák’s Serenade for Winds and Jennifer Jolley’s Lightway, a 2017 work based on Keith Sonnier’s light installation at Munich Airport. The piece musically portrays the rhythmic placement of red and blue lights emanating from the neon installation. Just as the panes of glass, mirrors, and aluminum sheets refract and scatter the colorful neon light, the ostinato is diffused amongst the different colors in the ensemble.

Winchester at 275

Shenandoah Conservatory’s vocal and choral ensembles, under the direction of Matt Oltman, Karen Keating and Jeff Marlatt, join the Wind Ensemble to celebrate Winchester’s 275th birthday. The concert features music from the northern Shenandoah Valley, as well as music written and performed around the world at the time of Winchester’s founding. Highlights include popular works written and recorded in Winchester; Variations on America by Charles Ives; Southern Harmony, a shape note-inspired work for wind ensemble by Donald Grantham; Bach’s intimate and tender fifth motet, Komm, Jesu, Komm (BWV 229), choral masterpieces from the Mexican Baroque; music by Shenandoah University Professor Emeritus, William Averitt; and a culminating beloved work for combined choirs and band.
