The Studio Big Band presents The Latin Side of Big Band featuring trumpeter and jazz faculty member Craig Fraedrich in a program exploring the rhythms, influences and origins of Latin Jazz. Highlights include works by Carlos Santana, Arturo Sandoval, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz and more.

A Brahms Concert

Associate Professor of Music History and Literature Laurie McManus leads us in a legacy celebration of German composer Johannes Brahms on the 125th anniversary of his death with performances of his works by Shenandoah Conservatory music students and faculty. Highlights include excerpts from the rarely heard Missa Canonica and the String Sextet No. 2 in G Major, op. 36.

This special concert is presented in connection with her book “Brahms in the Priesthood of Art: Gender and Art Religion in the Nineteenth-Century German Musical Imagination,” published by Oxford University Press in January 2021.

View a special free screening of Los Hermanos/The Brothers, a new film that powerfully captures the story of Harlem Quartet violinist and founder Ilmar Gavilán and Aldo López-Gavilán — two brothers who were separated by politics, but united by music. Free digital access with registration!

This engagement of Harlem Quartet with Aldo López-Gavilán is made possible through the ArtsCONNECT program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

About the Film

Virtuoso Afro-Cuban-born brothers — violinist Ilmar and pianist Aldo — live on opposite sides of a geopolitical chasm a half-century wide. Tracking their parallel lives in New York and Havana, their poignant reunion, and their momentous first performances together, Los Hermanos/The Brothers offers a nuanced, often startling view of estranged nations through the lens of music and family.

Featuring an electrifying, genre-bending score, composed by Cuban Aldo López-Gavilán, performed with his American brother, Ilmar, and with guest appearances by maestro Joshua Bell and the Harlem Quartet.
